Outdoor tree grown in South Africa - any ideas on the strain?
We never intended to grow a plant, but grow it did (from discarded seeds) and now, midway through harvesting, I thought it'd be a good idea to try and figure out what strain it is.
I'm guessing it took root around September '09 and we've harvested about half of what turned out to be a good 7-8' tall tree. The leaves are fairly sparse, mid-green and long and slender. The branches started perpendicular to the trunk but are now sagging downwards in a christmas-tree like shape. The buds started off bright green with plenty of fluffy white hairs and dotted all the way down the branches to the trunk. They've now matured to a deep green and many of the swollen resin glands have taken on a dark purple colour underneath the moderately thick layer of white crystals.
The plant has a very interesting smell - fresh and sweet - and the cured buds also have a honey-carrot nose to them.
My best guess is that it's close to a Malawi strain although the photos I've seen of Malawi Gold show smaller plants with upward growing branches. I'm from South Africa so chances are high that we came across some outdoor Malawi when buying bankies of 'bush weed' - low grade, cheap weed that can be bought in abundance from refugee dealers in South Africa that's usually referred to as Swazi (although I'm quite sure it's a very different Swazi than what you'll get from a European seed seller/dealer).
I'll try attach some photos soon of what's left of the tree as well as some of the cured/curing buds. If you have any idea as to what it might be, or have any experience growing Malawi outdoors I'd appreciate your input
