Outdoor tree grown in South Africa - any ideas on the strain?
We never intended to grow a plant, but grow it did (from discarded seeds) and now, midway through harvesting, I thought it'd be a good idea to try and figure out what strain it is.
I'm guessing it took root around September '09 and we've harvested about half of what turned out to be a good 7-8' tall tree. The leaves are fairly sparse, mid-green and long and slender. The branches started perpendicular to the trunk but are now sagging downwards in a christmas-tree like shape. The buds started off bright green with plenty of fluffy white hairs and dotted all the way down the branches to the trunk. They've now matured to a deep green and many of the swollen resin glands have taken on a dark purple colour underneath the moderately thick layer of white crystals.
The plant has a very interesting smell - fresh and sweet - and the cured buds also have a honey-carrot nose to them.
My best guess is that it's close to a Malawi strain although the photos I've seen of Malawi Gold show smaller plants with upward growing branches. I'm from South Africa so chances are high that we came across some outdoor Malawi when buying bankies of 'bush weed' - low grade, cheap weed that can be bought in abundance from refugee dealers in South Africa that's usually referred to as Swazi (although I'm quite sure it's a very different Swazi than what you'll get from a European seed seller/dealer).
I'll try attach some photos soon of what's left of the tree as well as some of the cured/curing buds. If you have any idea as to what it might be, or have any experience growing Malawi outdoors I'd appreciate your input

The plant with the longest narrowest leaves I have seen is pineapple. Blue dream has long slender leaves and green crack as well. I doubt any are related to your Malawi strain but it does sound interesting.

I know what strain it is :wtf: ....cannabis sativa, ahahaha. No, seriously dude, that's impossible to tell. Unless you purchase seeds from a reputable dealer it falls into the great big category of 'bagseed'. Could be anything and not every strain has a name. Some weed is just weed, hope it's good
My posts are completely hypothetical fiction. The photographs I post were found on the internet. I only post on these forums as a kind of fantasy gardening.

hahaha
bagseed it is then, until further revelation. to confuse the matter even more is the fact that our dealer at the time liked to attach the most ridiculous name tags to his 'sacks of swazi' calling them everything from Blueberry mix Blueberry, Purple Kush, KC-33 and Canada Classic - none of which are even remotely accurate

Like you said... being from that area it is most likely a malawi land race of some sort. Also ive seen alot of different malawi strains and alot of them are very tall outdoor plants. With long sativa leaves...
Do you have pics? You should take pics... Everyone wants to see it now!

I don't have any photos yet but I'll get some this weekend. Unfortunately it's looking properly skraggly now with half its branches gone but there are still some decent heads on it that I'll give you a look at

Seeing as though we're slap bang in winter I'm just hoping the bud rot stays away till after we've got the last bits off
Something else I just read somewhere is that very cold temperatures can cause buds to turn purple. We've had a good couple of nights below 10°C - perhaps that's the reason for the recent colouration?

It is true that the cold will turn some plants purple at the end.
