RI Releases Details of Marijuana Store Applicants

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The 15 applicants looking to open the state's first medical marijuana store are affiliated with a retired police chief, a longtime educator and a former state auditor general.

The state released details about the applicants Friday.

Last June, lawmakers voted allow up to three stores to sell marijuana to registered patients. According to the Marijuana Policy Project, Rhode Island is the sixth state to sanction medical marijuana dispensaries.

1 of the groups applying is led by Dennis Gentili, a former principal and educator in Woonsocket and West Warwick.

Another group, which is looking to open a center in Cranston, includes former state auditor general Ernest A. Almonte and retired Cranston police chief Col. Augustine A. Comella.

Many applicants would have retired police running security.
