you cud let it sit in darkness after 1pm till 4am, then flip the switch. darkness wont hurt the plants, too much light will freak them out.

which is less confusing to a plant, an extended night or an extended day? does in affect the plants more during flower or veg? wouldnt a slow change be safer?

Not exactly true. Cannabis is a photoperiod dependent plant. A dark cycle lasting 12 or more hours could trigger flowering hormones to be released. Likely it won't happen in one day, but it isn't fair to say darkness won't hurt. Cannabis is triggered by the DARK period, not by how much light, but rather how much uninterrupted darkness it gets

I would just extend the light cycle by an hour or so each day and take that time off the beginning of the cycle as you go. Some people grow on 18/6, some on 20/4, some 24/0. Myself I prefer 18/6, but the ONLY time I let the dark period get over 6 hours is to trigger flower.

Longer days would be less confusing because it doesn't cause any hormonal changes.
