"The genus Hyocyamus (Solanaceae) is well known for the production of anticholinergic tropane alkaloids. Crude drugs derived from this genus of plants, such as henbane, were used to relieve spasms of the gastrintestinal tract and to induce a sedative effect. On the other hand, the seeds of H. niger L. are known as Tian-Xian-Zi (literally meaning Fairy Ladys Seeds) in Chinese medicine and used as an antispasmodic, sedative, and analgestic agent, occasionally prescribed for the treatment of stomach cramps, heavy coughs, neuralgia, and manic psycosis. This crude drug is classified as a "toxic drug" in Chinese medicine due to its narrow theraputic window and potential toxicity(Cui-Ying Ma, Wing-Keug Liu, and Chun-Tao Che, J. Nat.
