But if it's all the water that helps pass a test, why do so many people fail when they try that?

Probably because they didnt drink enough to thin out the THCA concentration enough for the urine sample to register below the cutoff thresholds of the drug screen.

Theyve drank so much water that their creatinine and specific gravity nosedived out of acceptable ranges, which translates into a "too-dilute" test result. Many employers and probation departments treat a "too-dilute" result as a "fail".
