Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis, if elected, would ask President Barack Obama to re-examine lenient federal policies on Coloradoâ??s burgeoning medical marijuana industry.

The Obama administration in 2009 ordered federal officials to respect state marijuana statutes when they conflict with federal laws outlawing the drug. The change led to explosive growth in Colorado marijuana businesses, which McInnis said Thursday is cause for concern.

â??If I was governor I would call the president and say, â??What are you doing?â??â?� McInnis said after a Colorado Springs event Thursday.

McInnis was in town to pick up endorsements from the Colorado Springs Police Protective Association, District Attorney Dan May and El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.

McInnis, a former police officer, has burnished his crime fighting image in recent weeks as he battles through a GOP primary with Denver businessman Dan Maes.

McInnis has proposed immigration policies for Colorado similar to those enacted this year in Arizona, where police are now authorized by state law to check the immigration status of suspected undocumented immigrants. Now McInnis is wading into some of the stateâ??s most contentious waters â?? medical marijuana.

Colorado voters approved marijuana as medical treatment a decade ago by passing Amendment 20. The state General Assembly moved this year to regulate the widespread distribution of the drug with rules modeled on those imposed for liquor stores.

That has troubled many Republicans, including local state lawmakers, who contend that the amendment doesnâ??t provide for legal marijuana stores.

McInnis said he supports a piece of the new legislation that allows cities and counties to ban marijuana businesses.

In Colorado Springs, where the number of marijuana businesses went from a handful in early 2009 to more than 100 now, a group is pushing a petition drive to get a ban on the ballot.

â??The reason it all started is because of Obama,â?� McInnis said of the rising number of marijuana businesses.

Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, the sole Democrat in the governorâ??s race, said the new state regulations could alleviate concerns over marijuana businesses.

â??John supports the will of Colorado voters to give medicine to sick people and heâ??s hopeful that recent legislation will empower communities to address the common concerns around dispensaries,â?� said Hickenlooper spokesman George Merritt.

i can't believe I'm going to be voting for Chickenlooper... and likely contributing to his campaign.

we need to watch to see who else deciedes to run...with over 100,000 voters now having cards we do have a lot of voting power if it can be harnesed to our movement.
and to those who have never voted before this is a very important year for all of us...
WE need to get voters signed up and ready in the next 4 months for sure.

The important thing to note IMO is that it's Obama that is most responsible for the growth of MMJ in Colorado by telling the feds/DEA to leave the states alone. McInnis even said so.

But it's 50/50 if Obama will be reelected. If I were one of you dispensary owners, this would be a major issue for me. In 2 years, everything could go back to the way it was with the DEA busting everyone they can, and any state law won't matter.

I wonder if the DEA would stoop to building cases now, then wait to prosecute in the hopes of a change of presidents?

my thinking is that when we do get a firm grip on who is running that the dispensaries get together with fliers and brochures and talk to every customer they have about who should be elected and who should not...

they can be our biggest help in joining the masses to vote for our cause....they should be talking to thier customers now and getting them talked into getting signed up to Vote and not wait until the last minute....with over 100,000 card holders we can make a big differance when it counts.....:thumbsup:

I agree, in fact I would recommend even providing voter registration forms at the dispensary's, as well as posters to make suggestions.

can they hand out voter registration forms at the dispensary's...if so then whatn a boon to the cause...fill this form out get a doobie for your trouble and when you vote come back for another free doobie with your I voted sticky they give you...what a concept....I am sure this could work but is it legal???? inquiring minds want to know!!!!!!!!

Why? So the dispensaries can get their guys to pass another bill putting caregivers out completely? Screw the dispensaries.

we get good elected people into office then next year we overturn the bs or completly legalize medical mj....we have to start somewhere and there are some very good dispenaries out there who are on our side..gratful meds, d9 etc....with elected official in office who believe in our cause it will be a lot easier to overturn laws they made this year..
