getting caught....newbie question
I have a paranoid question about getting caught.. do hydro companies check to see if you are using power in cycles for example 12/12 for flowering. Will they find out , and let the cops know about it?

depending on how big of a light and how many, the increase in usage isnt really that much. 2 600w lamps and bill went up about $25. Could easily be a space heater or a/c unit. I really dont think they have time or the resources to look at everyone whose bill changes by $20

From my understanding the only things that will raise red flags is excessive usage i.e. the meter reader comes out, and sees your needle spinning alot faster than what they normally see. The primary reasons that people do get busted is due to the fact that loose lips sink ships. Keep your mouth shut about your grow operation, instead of telling people you grow it, just say you found some killer bud from a friend..
Also, the only time police will look in to a grow operation is if they have a rat, to lessen their sentence, they will tell the police where you live, and then police will use thermal imaging to see if there is excessive heat usage coming from that residence. This is legal in most states. In most cases, police do not bother going house to house since they don't have anything to go on except heat, no witnesses means no crime. Remember that.
If they have a witness saying they smell marijuana coming from your house all the time, or a disgruntled friend who doesn't like your prices, that will be enough for them to get you. There is no such thing as over cautious.
Without a witness to say otherwise, they can only assume you are at best, growing vegetables in an indoor garden.

thanks ..for the reply very helpful!...I was also thinking do cops looks at the cycle which we use our electricity.. if they saw a house hold using 12/12 for a good 2 month would that be suspicious.

That would be impossible to monitor, unless they have someone monitoring your electricity usage 24/7
It is not the police's job to monitor electricity usage. That is up to the electric company.
If you are using less than 2 x 1000W HPS lights, then I would say you are good, does not matter what cycle you use. 24/7 18/6 or 12/12 does not matter.
Right now is a good time to go up on your bill about $50, since it is summer, they will understand that people do use A/C units, so I would say it would look normal from a logical standpoint. If your bill went up another $200... that would be suspicious.

Remember, the question you are asking is completely hypothetical in nature and should not be taken seriously by anyone. It should only be utilized as an educational means.

If your ultra-paranoid then here is what you need to be on the look out for:
1. massive electricity usage...now I'm talking in the neighborhood of around 3 or 4 x 1000 watt lights and even then it still probably wouldn't raise too many questions by itself alone
2. bad neighborhood....if your trying to do this in a part of town where everyone else does this, then your already on the target list my friend. Many times the police target areas with high crime and or dense pockets of growers like in prelegal California.
3. drive by or fly over thermal camera...this really fits into section 2 as the cops have a budget just like every other organization does and they don't have the resources to fly over everyone's house looking for hot spots. The solution to this potential hazard is to use C3 film or anti-detection film. The infrared cameras cant see your hot spot room if you wrap your room with this film.
4. loose lips sink ships....your own mouth will more times then naught get you into trouble. Don't show anyone including your girlfriends, especially your girlfriends. Don't show your wife if your in the middle of a divorce. These people will have a moral objection more times then naught about what your doing and when the time comes to get even with you, they know this little hobby of yours can land you into trouble so they tell others.
5. smell.......each plant will put off a pretty decent odor after a while. More then a few plants can quickly cause the house to smell if you don't do something to resolve that. Be sure to vent and scrub your grow room air so that your guests and neighbors don't start to ask questions or even recognize the odor.
