5 or 6" fan for this cab?

Its about 6ft high, 3 1/2 ft wide, 2 1/2 ft deep roughly. The cut out fan hole in ceiling is 6". Also has a smaller 4 inch one bottom front for air in.

Im going to buy a 600watt dual digital ballast & cool tube, rvk fan and filter, possibly a short 'phat' filter.. if not a normal one. Not sure where to position the filter yet but I'l figure it out. Any input there would be appreciated. Diagram maybe? lol.

Mainly I need to know what size fan 5 or 6? any of them? then I can get the right size cool tube.

The top cab has an airbrick in the wall luckily so thats where I will vent out and keep the ballast.

I would go with the 6" because you don't know the heat characteristics of your cab. You may have the 5 installed and your temps may be to high and your will wish you had the 6 or even an 8.

Matching the duct size of the cool tube and the blower is not as important as matching the the cooling requirements of your cool tube to the blower. Your can always get duct reducer that goes from 5 to 6 or virtually any size you want to any size you want. I run 8 inch ducting and my hood duct is 10 inches.

Filter - cool tube - blower - Vent to outside your home.
If it vents inside your room, your room will get very warm.

I don't use a filter I just have my duct vent to the outside up high. Its about 30 feet off the ground and on the down wind side of my building. I can't smell anything anywhere around my building, because the vent location blows it to heaven.

Your should also try to remove that wiring from the back wall of your cab. Its hard to tell if its electrical or phone. Either way back there it has a chance of getting wet and burning your house down.

If you are unsure then go big. Bigger the better because you can always get a speed controller and turn the fan down. Bigger fans running at lower RPMs are much quieter then a smaller fan on full. Plus if you plan on using a filter or an air cooled hood you will need more CFMs.

Also you want your exhaust with the filter attached up high as possible. That way its removing the hot air that is rising and more efficiently cooling the cab as well. The smell tends to rise on the hot air also.

Thanks guys I was installing stuff only just seen your replies.

Well I settled with the 5" fan, filter & duct kit.

Im up a few stories, no worries about smell outside so I dont mind really if smells go out.. the roof is above me.. not even a flat accessible one. I just
cant have the smell in the house.

The wiring, mains, it gos up to the top closet for the fan and ballast. Ive covered the room now with light proof flame resistant mylar. Floor with waterproofing plastic. Sealed the door edges pretty well with draft excluder, could be done a touch more but the doors are awkward.

When the fan is running air is being sucked in via the 4" hole at the bottom near the window... it starts sucking from a good foot distance. Padded the fan out with cushions... my ballast is the nosiest cause of its fan but thats all fine and hushed enough.

Lights are on a relay of course.

I can have it running all day and the temps are pretty cool even if the lamp does get hotter than I hoped it would I can still touch it for a long while. I am venting from quite a distance and a few bends though.. so it would be even better with an intake fan bringing in cool air.

I'l attach some photos.. I looked around at other setups and note the filter goes at the top yeah, this is the only position I can fit it in there [as others Ive seen] it can go depth ways but the ducting dont fit.

Ive tested this setup by spraying the bottom of the closet with a bit of air freshener then smelling the vent out..... and I can smell the air freshener so now what do I do?

I have been reading endless debates on suck or pull through the vent.. and I come to the conclusion you are supposed to pull it.

Ive also read that maybe high fan speeds are the culprit [to others issues] cause its not giving the filter time.. but what do you think about mine at these distances with bends and 5" RVK? cant be too fast can it?

I know its pull... but I hear others push.. tho it could wear out the filter quicker?


All I know is they are too damn big and I can still smell air freshener through it..... lol...... or is that not a good sub for plants?
