    WHY are you considering pesticides?

Fungus gnats? White flies? Spider mites? Thrips?

Our answers depend on the details! What works for one, may not work for others! Spider mites, as an example, are rapidly building tolerance to many insecticides!

I have had good luck using Safer Fruit & Vegetable Insect Killer. It's an insecticidal soap. And yes, it kills spider mites. The really nice thing is that being a soap, you can rinse it off once it has done the job! Smoking insecticide, or even just soap, doesn't sound so great to me. :wtf:

After getting the tops and especially the bottoms of the leaves wet with the Safer, I set a fan on the plants to dry them (dampness can breed mold). I lightly spray with distilled water a day or two later, letting them sit for an hour to soften any residue and then I give them a thorough shower. I put a fan on them again to speed their drying.

The active ingredient is Safer is non-poisonous enough to drink, but you might vomit (however, any soap can do that) and is easily broken down by soil bacteria. Insecticidal soaps were very popular before the advent of today's insecticides. But they were too easily washed off by rain and needed to be reapplied frequently. Their loss of popularity was NOT because they were ineffective! They work best on soft bodied insects like mites. I had a lovely time looking at the shriveled mite corpses through my microscope, while searching for any survivors- I didn't find one!
