New to MMJ, new to NM, looking for answers

Hello!

I am new to the board, and new to MMJ as a whole. Have been a recreational user for 7 years now, but I have a couple issues that I would like to see if I can get a card for, but I am doubtful. I'm sure this is the best place to start!

I am 20 years old, just moved to Las Cruces from Anchorage, Alaska, and things are bit different to say the least. MMJ is approved in Alaska, but there are no dispensaries, and it's VERY hard to get approved up there. This is probably because it's damn near legal up there as is. You can legally have 24 plants in your home at any time, and I believe 2 ounces in your home, I'm not quite positive on that last one though, might be less. We have great privacy laws that prevent police from busting you in the privacy of your own home, preventing situations like the following:

The reason I am pursuing the idea of MMJ is because I believe I have DSPS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome that prevents me from getting to sleep at any decent hour of the night. I find myself regularly not being able to sleep until around 4-6AM everyday. I will lay there and toss and turn for hours, with no kind of visual or auditory stimulation to keep me awake.

The one thing that does help tremendously is pot. If I smoke a bowl before I go to bed, I can usually fall asleep within the hour, depending on my activity beforehand. Now I know MMJ has not been linked to DSPS treatment quite yet, but I'm curious as to what a reaction might be from a doctor that I present my problem to.

As I said, I'm quite new to the area, so I'm a bit lost on the political aspect and regulations required to get a card. Any information is greatly appreciated.

I will not sit here and make it seem like I am plighted with this horrible disease, because there are so many people out there more deserving than I am when it comes to MMJ. I've seen Cancer/HIV/AIDS care provider dispensaries, and THOSE are the people that really need this. It's just very hard to live a normal life when you are constantly running on emply sleep-wise.

So if it isn't approved for MMJ use, how would I go about petitioning for it to get approved? This is one of my many questions, so I will end what I have said so far, and let you guys get back to me.

I can already tell this is a very tightly knit community, and I'm looking forward to your educated and informative replies.

Ellanceo,

Try checking out this link. It is to the NM Infectious Disease Bureau and has just about all the information you are looking for.

Medical Cannabis Program - Infectious Disease Bureau

The board holds hearings, IRRC, every quarter or 6 months. One just happened in March.

You should also check out http://www.medicalmarijuanaradio.com/. It is from one of our members John Monad. VERY INFORMATIVE and has the straight scoop on things.

Best of luck in your search for information and petitioning for your condition!

I will do what I can to assist you in this situation.

The concise answer to your question is to call the DOH at 505-827-2321,
or email them at [email protected] to find out the date of the next new conditions review hearing in Santa Fe.Let them know that you plan on making a presentation at the hearing supporting DSPS inclusion as a Qualifying condition for the Medical Cannabis Program. Then, get your speech and documentation ready for the hearing to make your presentation. I will help as much as I can,as I think this condition should be included as Qualifying.

WOW!

Thank you all for the very informative posts, very awesome of all of you.

As I said before, I don't think DSPS is a debilitating disease, but...

"According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, "disability" is defined as a "physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities". "Sleeping" is defined as a "major life activity" in § 12012(2)(a) of the statute"

It does effect my day to day life, and does have an overall effect on my mentality and moral, and I like to believe my overall performance throughout the day. I AM NOT diagnosed with DSPS, that is simply a self-diagnosis, and before I could even consider getting serious about this I would have to get an official legit diagnosis, obviously.

I still, will absolutely petition to have it become a legitimate use for MMJ, but my age (I am 20), I think will really limit how much attention is paid to what I would be presenting. Support from members such as yourself will definitely help with that.

I am not just some pot-smoking naive (ok maybe a bit) deliquinent that doesn't do anything productive with his life. I am a part of a non-profit organization called Aloha Music/Movement Project, run my own business as a computer technician, and produce my own music. I'm also going to soon be manufacturing my own multi-touch computers (imagine an iPhone the size of a coffee table). As I said though, my age still limits me quite a bit with the image of the pot-smoking twenty-something that the government and health officials try to put off as standard.

Or I could be wrong about how things are run down here, I'm still very new down here, and pretty much everything seems to be very off-base compared to Alaska.

Again, thank you for all your information, and I really hope to hear more from people that might be having the same issues, and are looking to have the CHOICE of MMJ being made available to the public for such reasons.

Not getting enough sleep or having a "night" pattern DOES affect your life. I can attest to that and I have it documented. You surely aren't alone so let us know how your petition is going.

Las Cruces is a total 180 compared to AK,on the surface. The Catholic church has a strangle hold on this town. The hispanic culture here cannot endorse Cannabis publicly but the feelings are changing. Just as priests w/ no wives and no birth control, questions are being asked and action is being taken. Ganja is here and it is in all forms.

You should also know that though it may be a total shock the people here are good folks.

It must be strange to move from Alaska to NM.
