Interesting growth pattern

The strain that I am growing does this, but not quite as much. It happens even if I don't top/fim, I do use bloom enhancers, Bloombastic last grow and Cannaboost this grow.

Nice looking strain/cola btw.

I have a strain that tends to develop colas like that too. I too use bloombastic.

Found out what and why.
The phenomenal growth pattern is called "donkey ears" and my source is Greg Green's book about breeding. He had a picture of dried ones, and then I knew what it was, as of course I have some dried ones..

The event is a sativia trait coming out during the flowering process.

I lost the RMT strain, but my Strawberry Cough does the same thing.

My Blueberry does that in the last 2 weeks. Pretty F'n cool, just flowers coated in trichomes! imp:

Donkey ears huh? If it's a sativa trait, why then do I notice it so pronounced on my Blueberry which should be 80% indica? And not on my Durban which is like 90% sativa? :wtf:

My boss has a few strains. Unfortunately when he got into growing, a friend gave him a bunch of plants, when his house nearly burnt down. After getting the plants, my boss lost track of what ANY of them actually are!!:wtf3:

Just after he finally got a group flowered, he found a strain that did this all the way up the buds (bottom up) in LONG strips (some three inches +):wtf:. The plant that did it was HUGE by the time he flowered (5'+). However put out very little weight. Thus each bud cluster was a pain to trim and produced very little.

Oddly these "Donkey ears" were quite effective. PLUS you could just pull one of these two inch "ears" off a bud and role it AS IS!!:thumbsup:

Being such a pain to trim the strain he stopped growing it. Whatever it was is gone now.

i'v always called that "fox tailing" --a sign of overly ripe flowers imho. in some verities/phenos under lights the flower structure will become fully mature before the trichs age to amber.

Bully: Over ripe, not if the trichs haven't changed color. Read, learn. As CanniW notices it in the last 2 weeks, I have seen it as early as at 4 weeks into flower depending on the phenotype.

Canni...I have no flipping idea. I assume it is just a tiny trait of the sativa that comes. I shall see with this Thai, never had a truer sativa in my garden. One little DNA change is all it apparently takes. One link in the whole chain.

I humbly plead stupidity about that part.

Thanks W'Wonder, today I learned that growth pattern is know as "donkey ears".

It is a result of a chemical defect in the plant. The auxim that normally controls lateral side branching of the stalk is present in the growing tip of the flower, causing it to grow the flower or bud laterally.

Very interesting "interesting growth".

interesting comment---i do so love to read and learn-- god forbid that i reach a point where i think i know it all--maybe i didn't make myself clear---the cola is deteriorating [becoming fluffy,stretching] and approaching death .the fox tailing [aka "donkey ears"] is evidence of this.cola maturity and trich ambering are two diffrent things imho.

OMIs this specific to the sativa trait in your knowledge base? Only very specific strains do this. Am I correct in assuming this is what I should expect for tops on Thai?
