Obama Said to Be Open to New Miranda Look

WASHINGTON â?? David Axelrod, the top White House political adviser, said Monday that President Obama was amenable to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.â??s call for a new law allowing interrogators to question terrorism suspects for lengthy periods without informing them of their rights.

In an interview on CNN, Mr. Axelrod said Mr. Obama was â??open to looking atâ?� changing the Miranda rule, which generally bans prosecutors from using as evidence statements made by suspects in custody before they have been warned that they have a right to remain silent and to consult a lawyer. â??There may be some things that have to be done,â?� Mr. Axelrod said. â??Certainly weâ??re willing to talk to Congress about that. But they would be in the area of adjustments, not a wholesale revision.â?�

Mr. Axlerodâ??s comments came a day after Mr. Holder called for Congress to enact legislation that would carve out a new exception to the Miranda rule. It comes from a landmark 1966 Supreme Court decision that is intended to ensure that confessions are not coerced, consistent with the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

While it is virtually certain that the White House knew about and approved of Mr. Holderâ??s policy proposal before he made it on Sunday, the remarks by Mr. Axelrod provided a stronger public link between the idea, which has drawn fire from civil libertarian groups, and Mr. Obama himself.

Over the past year, Republicans have sharply criticized the Obama administration for treating some terrorism suspects â?? including United States citizens arrested on United States soil, like Faisal Shahzad, the man accused of attempting to detonate a car bomb in Times Square this month â?? as criminal defendants rather than as military detainees under wartime rules.

Conservatives have long disliked the Miranda ruling, and its use in terrorism cases has been especially controversial because of worries that the warning might interrupt the flow of an interrogation, prompting a suspect to stop providing information that could disrupt a future attack.

Obama's expanded the war on terror, and from someone who usually opposes Obama's nanny state policies, his war on islamofascism is going great...he basically adopted the Bush policies towards Islamic conservative nuts who wanna live in the 1200's again. The drone strikes are becoming VERY effective against the mujahadeen wannabe Taliban who live in constant fear of blowing up at any place, at any time, with no warning whatsoever.

and you feel a list like that doesn't deserve to exist? Not that it matters, the panties bomber was on that list and made it onboard. I agree that having a no-flylist causes troubles for people, especially in a religon where every name is almost identicle.

Obama & Bush are just about the same.....they are both expanding the FEDS powers in different directions according to their ideology....which no matter what or who.....makes a bigger,more powerful, Fed...which is DANGEROUS for all people.

You don't need to make laws when you can twist and change them as you please.

The reason for the Miranda is the police do not have the right to interogate US citizens. It is not thier job and never was. Thier are to arrest you, take statements from witnesses and charge you.

Only Military and not on US soil can they interogate. GITMO.
Or any military base because a base is not under US law it is under military rule and you can be detained for ever without any reason.

So all he has done is another Probabble cause claws that takes away everyones right's because all they have to say is " TERRORIST SUSPECT " and it is all alright.
