question on age of plant and pot size.
If i were him id start it out in the 5 gallon and then about, or close to July, id cut the bottom off and then put it in the ground. The plant will fill the 5 gallon space, then after amending the ground with good soil, id cut the bottom off with a tool you would put on a drill like a drumael<not sure what its called, but then id stack it on the amended soil and let it grow into the ground for flowering. Let it stretch its roots to flourish.

Like dmcefc said, they fill the below ground, then above, so let the 5 do its thing, but then let the roots free to flower her, cuz they will. And this will help yield more IMO then just putting it straight in the ground. I like to re pot 2-3 times before i put them in the ground. Builds a great root structure faster.
