OK...friendship requests....how do I do this?

I've received a few and sent a few. I don't have a friggin clue how to proceed. When I try typing the name of the requestor in the little box and then I click on it so I can accept the request, nothing happens that I can see. Can anyone hold my hand like a 5 year old clueless dunce and explain HTF to accomplish this in some sort of step-by-step process?......and no....I haven't been testing product....I guess I come by this naturally.

receiving: just click, to check the accept box...at the bottom of the page

sending: click on (user name)..their public profile...on that page will be a befriend...link
