    promoting vertical growth

I created a rather small but tall grow area, it is 20inch by 70inch and about 6 ft tall. My last crop was my first, and i only let the plants get about 2 feet tall, but the growth was so dense that the bottom half never got any light, therefore didnt really flower. I am a few weeks into my next crop, and again the plans are growing very compact. I have a 400w and great reflection, but this strain is suppose to grow vertical, no topping.

My question is, how can get these plants (4) to grow more vertically and get buds the whole way down? What is the proper way to trim some of these leaves blocking large amounts of light to the lower section of the plant? ... or should i be using some sort of LST method and forget the vertical space?

sounds like some lst would fix your problem... if you need more info this link should answer any questions you have

What if i already have 8-10 nodes but haven't started to LST, is it too late?

I suppose i can just make the first bend over a few days since my stems are hardened a bit already.

Would this really be my best option? Don't get me wrong it looks like an amazing technique, but is this the best way to get 4 plants to utilize a 6 foot tall box?

Zompton, in my time here I don't think anyone has ever asked how to grow a plant taller and lankier to fill a height requirement.

I see your logic, "utilize your space". Do you want your plants 6' tall, or is that where your ceiling is? In a small footprint like you have, maybe the best option would be to separate your space into 2 chambers on top of eachother. You could keep a small cloning space in one?

Trying to get your plant taller is only going to lead to disappointment imho. Your 400w probably has only 2-3 feet of "good penetrating" light under it anyways. You would be just as well served flowering 12" clones and just stuffing your footprint full of em for now. I think you'd be surprised what 10 or 12 small clones will give you versus a couple tall trees. I have run both ways before and while i love looking at a big tree with a huge cola, you still only have about 3' of good growth down from the top. That means that you shift the non used space from the top to the bottom, a moot point if you think about it.

I don't think LST is what you were looking for. While it would help fill your space, you don't have a problem with it getting dense. I think you should look at how YOU are utilizing your space, not how your plants do, and see what you can change there:thumbsup:

Just my thoughts, don't hold em' against me:detective1:

I want them to be 3 feet (i have like 4 feet but want enough room from the light when it is at the top) maybe a bit more at the end of flowering. I think i might do some slight lst to allow more light down once they are taller, or maybe trim the shade leave since they are huge! What are proper ways to trim to achieve proper light penetrations, ie what to do, when to do it and not to do? I just don't want to have 3ft plants that only flowered 1ft from the top.

Irydyum is correct, you may be the first person asking how to grow taller, lanky plants. (I went to give you rep Iry, but I got to spread the love around first, I owe you one :thumbsup

Zompton, LSTing is a method to fill out a canopy and used to hold heights down. Trimming to allow more light to the bottom will just slow the growth.

Consider chopping the plant's top when it is finished, lower your light, and let the bottom finish flowering. If it has buds low that are smaller and immuture this will get them to plump up and finish better.

    Good luck and good growing.

You could tie it up the walls maybe?

What I'm thinking is put lattice on the three non door walls. Then instead of tying it down(LST), tie it to the walls. Then you have light penetration all the way to the pot, no matter how tall it gets.

This may not work on your current grow. It'd sure be interesting to watch.

I am thinking of doing just that! Maybe another small light at the bottom of the box during flowering would help too!
