tags?

I am just wondering what they are for?
I notice I can put them in my threads and other peoples?
Is it just a word i put so when people search for something my thread shows up? Does it help out with Google searches or searches only on these boards or both?
I would like to start using the tag feature effectively but do not really understand it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I think it's just to mark a thread, so peeps can find it again, easily...:stoned:...or..

...it's the tags; farmers put in the ear of cattle?...:wtf:...

I guess I kinda thought that. I was just wondering if it helps to get the threads up on the google searches or if it just works on the searches on the boards. I guess it does not really matter.
