PHOENIX, Ariz. - There's a new push to make marijuana legal for medical use in Arizona, and more than 150,000 people have left their signatures to put it on the November ballot.
Arizona voters may get to decide in November whether to legalize marijuana for medical purposes.
Supporters of a medical marijuana initiative submitted petition signatures to the Secretary of State's Office to qualify the measure for the general election ballot.
The measure would allow people with certain medical conditions to have a small amount of marijuana if they have a doctor's recommendation.
It would allow the creation of nonprofit marijuana dispensaries to sell the drug to approved patients.
Thirteen other states allow the possession of small amounts of marijuana for medical purposes. New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine signed a medical marijuana bill in January but it hasn't yet become effective.

Medical Marijuana Question Could Go to Voters

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Voters could soon decide whether to legalize medical marijuana in Arizona.
One group is pushing to get it on the ballot, and say they have more than enough signatures to put the issue before the voters. If it passes, Arizona could join more than a dozen other states that allow medical marijuana.
The people behind the initiative delivered 252,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's office.
If it passes, marijuana would be sold through regulated clinics, just like in other states like California.
In both Los Angeles and Denver, city leaders say at one point there were more marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks.
The city of Los Angeles is starting to crack down on stores operating without a proper license. But supporters believe its time for Arizona to move forward and they believe these signatures prove people want this.
Supporters say the program would only allow 120 dispensaries statewide, and they would have to operate as nonprofits.
In 1996, voters approved a similar initiative, but it was overturned by the Legislature. A number of other medical marijuana-related initiatives have failed since

(I'm am happy to state that I am one out of the 252,000 signatures on this ballot and hope that I may get the first chance to actually vote for this this coming November 2010!)

My understanding is the Arizona Senate has already passed legislation to tax marijuana if legalized (for medical use anyway). This and the possible one percent sales tax increase going to the poll could place the State government and the schools in a good position financially. Right now they're in deep shit.
