    Teen Hospitalized After Marijuana Overdose

Omaha (KPTM) - Marijuana laced possibly with formaldehyde was behind a teen's seizure Friday morning at Burke High School.

The unidentified student, a junior, was taken to the hospital but later released to her parents.

Omaha Public School spokesperson Luanne Nelson says marijuana use is on the rise.

"We're seeing a little bit of rise in marijuana use by younger kids," she says.

One reason could be perception. Other states are lessoning penalties for marijuana possession. Some, including neighboring Colorado, allow it for medicinal purposes. Nelsons says sometimes teens can perceive that as a mixed message.

"When a teen sees a story about medical marijuana, they relate it to something they may try," she says.

Students like Michael Cantiano, a freshman at Burke, say he sees kids smoking on campus. He saw the junior girl get carried out of school too.

"I saw some kids smoking this morning," he says. "They put her on they bed thing. They had an IV with her."

The student faces a 19â??day suspension, and also will take a drug treatment class.

Nelson says OPS continues to emphasize the perils of drug use to its students. She says never knowing exactly what is in a substance can prove dangerous, a scenario Burke students saw firsthand.

Its not going to do anything. It sounds like a joke. People will read it then move to the sports page. Less and Less people are falling for that kind of thing. Its almost a good thing in a way.
