    Smell is Little Off???

I am almost done with my first grown. I had four white widow plants and had to harvest one early due to plant problems so now I have three left. I've starting flushing two of them because they're about ready to harvest. I cut off a few buds a couple weeks ago and they don't smell very good. It's not mold or anything like that. It kind of smells like fresh cut grass. It definitely isn't that typical and wonderful marijuana smell I'm used to. I can't imagine why it wouldn't smell good. The plants look great and the buds I harvest smoke well. To cure the buds I've harvested I put them in a paper bag for a few days to initially dry it out and then I put them in a glass jar and put that in the refrigerator. I take it out and open it up every now and then. Like I mentioned before they smoke good, but just don't smell very good. I've had moldy bud before and it isn't that kind of a smell. The closest way to desribe it is kind of like cut grass. It's not a pleasant smell though. Does anybody know if this has something to do with how you cure it or if I didn't something wrong?

    Smell is Little Off???

I'm interested in answers here cause i'm over a month into flowering and not a potent smell yet.

I caught a 'purple' smell type whiff from a leaf the other day, not a bud. The buds smell nice, but i gotta get in real close.

fresh cut grass smell is normal after harvesting and during drying. after its dry your bud may also smell like dry hay. you need to cure your buds in a air tight jar after drying it.

oh and ribbit. some genetics smell at different times. my purple kush only starts to smell at 5-6 wk

The cut grass smell is normal. It either means the plants are immature, and aren't ready for harvest yet, or they weren't dried and cured properly.

Patience is a must, as you can ruin 3 months of work by jumping the gun.

What do your trichomes look like? Any pictures?

    Smell is Little Off???

I'm glad you asked about pictures because I was going to see if anybody could give me some advice on whether or not it's time to harvest these. I have a microscope and have been trying to watch the trichomes, but I'm still not sure if it's time to harvest them though. I've seen some trichomes turning amber on the top of the plant, but it was only on the very top where I think it got too hot from the light. Some of the pistils turned a week or two ago and it doesn't seem like many more have turned orange since then. Next Wednesday will make 8 weeks in flower, which is the recomended flowering time. I have taken a couple samples and it's a good smoke right now. I just wasn't happy with the smell on the first plant I took down. It was way too early. It had only been flowering for about 5 weeks. The plant was dying though so I had to get what I could off of it. Let me know if you have any opinions on how much longer you think I ought to let these go.

Those look alot like my buds and i'm still waiting a couple of weeks. I thought you were supposed to watch the hairs before the trichomes. I heard wait till you got like 75-85% red hairs then start looking at trichomes.

Still some clear trichs, but getting there. I agree with letting them go a week or two longer if possible, if you are looking for the "where the hell did my hand go...?" type of effect.

Curious where you heard this, but...
Nope. Pistils (the hairs) are no indication of anything other than the plant is hairy. Once they are (individually) no longer a tube that can catch and transport the pollen to the ovum inside the calyx (creating the seed) ...they die-off.
Damage is frequent and can be from mishandling (squeezing the bud) battered by other buds, branches and leaves, burned by the lights or heat...
Pollination of the calyx also renders the tubes obsolete, and the pistils will die-off as a result.

Loads of healthy pistils are a good sign that the plant is maturing, but not a gague of readiness. Trust the trichomes. They won't steer you wrong.

Sorry but trusting the trichomes sounds way too much like i'm in Fraggle Rock. Heh, i'll start lookin closer.

*ps i'm also going by reported plant life based on species... supposed to be 8-9 weeks flowering, and i'm getting that impression from plant
