MY GF was afraid of the same thing - got a cheap smoke alarm, brought her out to the tent - tested the alarm and said 'stop worrying, everything will be fine'...and everything was!! (fine I mean)

If they are only getting 7-8 hours in veg then you may have a longer wait, light is everything to a plant...

Get some ventilation, plants need fresh circulating air , I have a cheap 5$ fan blowing over mine, and at first just used a $35 inline fan from home depot to pull air through my tent...I have since upgraded to a carbon filter setup due to the smell. I couldn't tell by your post what you are using (tent, attic, closet, etc...)

Honestly , no one will be able to tell you how much you are going to harvest - every strain acts a little differently. Are they healthy and green? I flip mine to 12/12 when they are about 14-16 inches.

    good luck :smokin:

Using a 250w you are very unlikely to have a fire. It likely only pulls about 3 amps(if that). So it's just like running two and a half standard 100W incandescent bulbs on that breaker/circuit.

8 hours of HPS to veg will be a huge issue for you. First off the plant goes into flower at 12/12 because it takes 12 hours for the flowering hormones to build up enough to trigger flowering. Eight hours of light means 16 hours of dark. So without more daylight hours your plant is going to stretch like crazy.

Add to that. A HPS light is not meant to veg a plant. That is a flowering light. Even with 18/6 the plant will stretch under that color bulb! You want a metal halide bulb to veg the plant.

Budsndrums is correct on the yield. No one can tell you what you'll get. Plus under your conditions(less then flowering hours for light), no one here could even tell you if you'll succeed at all!

Your mercury vapor likely doesn't have the right spectrum of light (5000K-6500K = more blue light). You can grow quite a plant with CFLs too. Just try to find 6500K temp on the box or bulb base. CFLs create less heat, and put out pretty good lumens per watt of energy used. Plus by not getting to hot, you can get them close to the plant.

    Issues with CFLs are,

First,.. You need to get a good number of them(add up the lumens). Each 27w make about 1700 lumens. You want 4000-5000 lumens per cubic foot of grow space. However with LST or SCRog you can get that easier through keeping the bulbs closer to the leaves.

Second,.. CFLs just don't produce the intensity of an HID. SO flowering with CFLs usually won't give you the bud density, or as high a yield as the HPS light will for flowering.

So in your case, use CFLs to veg and your HPS to flower! Your biggest issue however(because people DO veg under HPS the plants are just tall and stretched) is you giving only 8 hours of light. The plant should be getting 16-24 hours of light per day! Preferably blue light, not red. Red is for flowering.

...you need to use something a little more 'blue-y' for the veg/growth stage. I'd keep the HPS around, but go nuts buying the little 100w equiv/26w actual 6500k daylight CFLs. A box of six goes for 20bux up here, so you could get a dozen or so hung tight around your plant(s) if you wanted for like 50bux or less.

And if you get the right ones, 12x26w=312w actual consumption, not too bad...
12x1750 lumens, tho... equals 21000 if you get 'em /close/ enough...

    Muah hah hah (tm)

    FIRST TIME GROWER NEEDS HELP?????

hey mystic, you may want to consider doing a scrog. with a smaller light, you won't get much penetration into the canopy. a scrog will def increase your yield.
