Just starting--power requirements

I'm using an insulated 8 x 10 shed with a large roof fan. I'm going with 2 systems, either 600w or 1000w HPS, haven't decided yet. Will need heat in the winter. How much power do I need? I was thinking 20 amps, but someone told me that with HPS I need more.

Hey Batgirl,
A single 1000 watt HPS draws about 1150 watts depending on your ballast efficiency if it's electronic or magmetic. 1150 watts is @ 120v is 9.6 amps so you only going to be able to run 1 1000 and 1 600 plus all your fans etc. on a 20 amp circuit.

You will need to run quite a bit of power. I would run a leg off your main panel of 30 or 40 amps @ 220 volts. Then you can put in a sub-panel and have all the power you need.

I would also look at LED's they cost less to run and do not put off the heat of an HID light.

For my 1000 watter I have a 40 amp breaker dedicated to lighting.. You could run 2 fans and 1-1000 watter saftley and keep you from any worry! Both my 600's and 1000 watters are electronic ballasts,so that would make a difference in amp draw and running amps as well..Hope this was some help!

I just re-did the power at my place. I was tired of having the breaker go every time we used the microwave, vac, hair dryer. I good rule is to only load your breaker to 75%. This rule will always keep your wires from over heating.

I have a 1000hps and 400mh and 2 blowers, and butt load of air pumps, fans, water pumps, music radio.

I ran 12 gauge cable for the 20 amp circuit which runs the 400 and all accessories with two 15 amps outlets (four outlets total).

Then I ran 10 gauge cable for the 30 amp circuit with two 15 amp outlets (4 total) The 30 runs the 1000 and the fans. I am way under 75% but I plan on adding a 1000 later. 9.9a + 9.9a + 2a = 21.8 21.8a/30a = 73%. So with the two 1000 I am still under 75%. Also a 30 amp breaker breaks at 25-26 amps, a 20 amp breaks at 17-18. Also the 10 gauge cable can easily run 220, just change to a 20 amp, 220 breaker and get 220 outlets, and bam your amps spit in half and you will get less loss over the spans of cable you ran.

I got 25 feet of 10 gauge cable for 46 bucks a grow depot, its not cheap but the 30 amp breaker was 4 bucks and the out lets are 4 bucks which is cheap. The 12 gauge is cheaper I got mine free so I don't know the cost. You may have an older type breaker box, the older type breakers are 25 bucks each because they don't make them anymore.
Some people might say 12 gauge is enough for 30 amps but I don't want to take any chances on burning my place down. Also I live in an apt, and can't turn the power to the the breaker box because I don't have access. I was able to install the breakers with out shutting power off. 110 aint that bad anyway.

Your should defiantly run the 1000 with a super HPS.
