Directions: From Payson go north on hwy 87 to
strawberry, in town you will see a sign for Fossil
Creek Rd(Fr 708) go west, the road turns to dirt ,
follow this for around 12 miles to a Y in the road.
There is a sign for the Verde River hang a left(south
south west FR 502)go past Stehr Lake. When you get to
the top of the ridge you'll start winding down into
the canyon,there are quite a few parking spots along
the road, at the bottom of the canyon you'll see
Childs hydroelectric plant and a sign to the
campground
TURN AROUND HERE the last 100 yards of the road are
rough even for a 4WD. Please leave the campground open
for the locals who come out and park along the
road(maybe a couple miles up)
