LEGAL Grow...first timers cfl grow bug and/or plant deficency *PICS* *NEED HELP ASAP*

I have a fem purple wreck and mystery seed growing...10 23watt cfls. started feb. 9th. only given water and planted in fox farm ocean forest. (NO NUTES YET).

just noticed this problem yesterday.

biggest leaves turning yellowish...and i also noticed one plant has a hole and bite mark in two leaves...

hoping to get an answer as to the problem and a solution.

thinking fox farm grow big would be in order if its a nitrogen problem. lemme know PLEASE!!!


edit: note: pics 5 and 6 show the bite off the edge of the leaf and a hole in the middle of another. the rest show the yellowing...on the first pic its easy to see on the other two you have to look closely on the VERY edges...

and NO the lights are not too close. im sure.

Fill out the troubleshooting form at the top of this forum, then copy and paste it here. Also some pics of the entire plant would help.

Are they really that color? Or is that just because of the lighting when taking the pic?

What is your experience level? first timer

Your Equipment:
.1) Type and wattage of lights. 10 23Watt CFLs.
.2) Distance from tops? they about 3 inches away (they were drying out the leaves earlier on in the grow from being too close)
.3) Reflector type?no reflector.
.4) Is there a consistent fresh air supply? somewhat. i have a fan blowin on the plants in around the room.
.5) Do you have an exhaust fan and a circulation fan? not formally.
.6) What are the bulb wattages, kelvin ratings, and schedule? 10 cfls. all 23 watts... 7 are the 6500k rated ones and the other 3 are 2700K.

Your medium:
.7) Specific brand and type of soil, fox farm ocean forest.
.8) Size of container. 1.5 gallon pots.
.9) Did you use peat pucks (or similar) to root clones or germinate seedlings? no.

Your nutrients and water:
10) Source of water? tap water that is left out 24hrs prior to use.
11) Method of checking water ph. none. (soon though)
12) Method of adjusting water ph. no need yet.
13) Specific brand and N-P-K ratio for each bottle. none.
14) How often are you watering between feedings, and how much per watering? no feedings yet but they are watered only when needed. (it varies)
15) Any additives or tea's?no
16) Are your ph levels stable, or do they fluctuate? not aware
17) What is your ingoing water's ph? idk
18) Do you foliar feed? none yet.

Your growroom:
19) Indoors or outdoors? indoors
20) What size of closet, room or hut? its set up in the center of the room with mylar on wood panels surrounding the plants (they can be moved easily) looks similar to how a recording studio is set up with the large sound panels are certain instruments...just with mylar on them.
21) What are the temps and humidity levels while lights are on? ...With lights off? no way to check yet
22) Have you seen signs of insects in the growroom? only recently. i seen the hole in the leaf and the missing piece of another leaf (pictured)

Your strain:
23) What strain are you growing? (Indica dominate or Sativa dom?) purple wreck fem seed from wwms. and a mystery i saved from some weed i got a while back.
24) From seeds or clones? seeds.
25) Is this an autoflower strain? no.

i added some fox farm grow big for the first time yesterday.

i teaspoon per gallon of water...each plant took in half of that gallon.

woke up this morning...no change...not any worse...not any better.



idk how many days or how much time it would take to notice a difference but i also dont know if thats what the plant needed or not.


hoping to get some more definite answers here.

Probably a Nitrogen deficiency. Should get better since you just fed, but it takes a few days to notice any change.

Would be interesting to know the ph coming in and out though... because if it's off, no amount of nutrients will help.

Does the rest of the plant look healthy? Bottom leaves will yellow and die without sufficient lighting, but hard to know without a pic of the whole plant :jointsmile:

I posted this problem on several forums with no replies...

so i just made a first timer's educated guess. i been smoking off and on for 7 yrs (smoking a solid 4-5)...but this is my first go round with growing. i been reading up and studying forums since oct of 09. so with all i seen and learned i had to guess it was a lack of nutes.

i need to get myself a ph meter.

would you happen to know where i can find one without breaking the bank? (not looking for spend $100-$200 on ph meter/test kits)

I added the nutes in a pretty weak mix just incase nitrogen deficiency wasnt the problem...didnt want to make it worse.

im not at my grow spot (i dont grow at my house) but will be there later on today i will be sure to get more pics and post them.

You don't necessarily need a ph pen. PH strips will do fine for a soil grow. Just have to remember that the water should be clear when testing with color coded kits. If you want to test run-off, run it through a coffee filter or paper towel first. You can usually get the strips at Home Depot or probably Wally World also.

Google "Milwaukee ph-600" and these pens are said to be good. They're about $20, so I'd buy a couple of them at once, in case it does fail. (like 99% of pens eventually do)
