Disclaimer: I am not giving medical advice. I have medical training to the level of EMT-P. Statements I make are to be discussed with your doctor.
A couple of posts down I have started a thread with what I consider to be VALID references without bias. There is one group regarding cardiorespiratory.
Generally there is a transient increase in heart rate when smoking. I can tell you from personal experience, that oral ingestion will raise your rate for a little while as the medication begins to take effect. From my research this seems to be due to the lowering of the blood pressure. This is much more pronounced smoking as people hold their breath too, creating a slight hypoxic state.
What may not be considered here, is this obviously was in the past, how long ago I have no idea or way of knowing. But as a former medic, I often saw the side effects of pot laced with sherm/angel dust/PCP, which will raise the heck out of blood pressure and heart rate. So maybe it was laced?????
Sometimes certain genotypes will cause panic attacks in certain folks. I have a neighbor who cannot utilize White Widow for that very reason, but can use Haze just fine.

From my experience, it doesn't happen 'a lot' but it does happen.
Obviously we cannot tell you whether or not its all in your head, because we don't have enough information. But, IF it really is in your head, that would not be abnormal. There are plenty of people who have panic, anxiety, and overall discomfort issues with smoking marijuana. As Washougal hinted, try some different strains and see which is more comfortable for you.
Worst comes to worse, there's no harm in not smoking and drinking.

i have a qeustion about heart rate going up?
I have been smoking for almost three years and i had that the first time i smoked, i think maybe once again i have had it recently but was too stoned to remember but. If i am getting a bit paranoid i can reasure myself by saying its just the weed and its one of those things that sometimes happen. Mind over matter, people dont die from marijuana !

Depending on where you live, it really isn't as daunting an experience if you tell the doc you use cannabis as medicine (I don't know why you use, but use your own judgement.)
i have heart problems and diabetes so had many concerns about my pot usage. I've been seeing my specialist for 12 years and he was very receptive, even though the group of doctors he's with won't write my RX.
But he helps me from a medical point with any questions I have. If you're worried about any serious health issue, can you really afford to take that a with your life? I do think that marijuana is harmless all things compared, but there are plenty of articles out there about risk for a heart attack increasing 4x in the first several minutes of toking. I still choose smoking as it's more effective for my pain, but at least my doc and I have talked about it and he is involved if a problem arises.
I hope you find peace to use your medicine as you need and talk to your doctor about your usage if you are having serious concerns. Good luck. (p.s. if you have never had any other question with thinking issues are "in your head"; or history of emotional issues, it's a good thing to examine to figure out if it is or not. Trying different strains is good for anything. Trying a hybrid instead of indica or sativa is also a good idea.)

im one of those people that can have a panic attack/anxiety attack from smoking...even the increased heartrate.
i noticed it only happens on certain strains of weed (and it matters on how much i have).
theres been a strain or two that i can take 3 hits and possibly have a panic attack...then there are others i can twist up a blunt and smoke it to myself without the slightest ill-effect.
I noticed i feel best of certain headhigh sativas. im a pretty stressed person to begin with most of the time (although i appear laid back my mind is always running in 10 different directions) so when i have certain weeds that make me feel paranoid or not in control of my body then it makes me breathe really fast but i dont notice it when its starting...so yea...i passed out once from that...hit my head...not fun...
but like i said i think it matters on the strain...some dont bother me at all and other makes me uncomfortable.
usually though i always get the uncomfortable feeling with all high thc content indicas (18% and up) but it usually goes away within 10 mins of me feeling the effects of the weed.

i have a qeustion about heart rate going up?
Well, let me elaborate.
Last month I was found to have a 99% blockage of the artery that feeds the left ventricle of my heart. It is known as the "widowmaker" lesion for the high mortality associated with this lesion.
During my workup for that I continued to smoke cannabis. Now mind you I could not walk to the mail box without getting chest pain. Only one time did I get chest pain, and that was after a coughing spell.
I find this truly amazing that my heart could take the extra demand without causing side effect issues. My cardiologist was informed of this. He was all for continuing the cannabis during my hospitalization, albeit oral ingestion over smoking.
NOW, that is my body, not anyone elses, but it does show that the cannabis seems to not effect blood flow to the myocardium in a negative manner. Studies will have to be done to prove this of course.

MJ jacks with your heart rate and can cause atrial fibbrilation. In which your atrias (top low pressure pumping chambers of the heart) quiver instead of pumping blood efficiently. Quite a few old hippys I know have the affliction. Not life threatening just makes you feel weird when it first starts. Biggest danger is blood clots forming in the heart because the blood is not being pumped out vigorously. You can get it shocked back into beating right with a procedure called cardio version or similar. If that dont work they put you on blood thinners aka wafferin, coumadin which is actually a rat poison invented back in the 40's. It interrupts what is called the Vitamin K clotting factor. If you get too much it make you bleed out and die as with a rat who eats it. That strategy is usually accompanied by a heart rate limiting drug such as Attenolol and/or Digoxin. There is a last ditch prodcedure called oblation where they go in through the groin and kill the miss firing cells. If they kill too many of the cells then you have to have a pace maker. Hope this helps.
