I dont wanna sound like a dick or anything but if your really a first timer I would get some high quaility potting soil that drains well and stick with that. Hydroponics are very touchy and in alot of cases require alot of maintence and growing experience. Problems come up and need to be addressed very quickly. The chances of overfertlizing and or even killing you plants are alot higher. Soil is much more forgiving and much easier for the begginer grower.If i were you I would get a couple of soil grows under your belt and just bask in the beauty of the cannabis plant and learn as much as you can. Then when you feel that you really know what your doing you can jump into the hydro. You will get better results that way any how.


As for lighting cfls will work great as will T5's. The great thing about them is they dont put off alot of heat so that tends to not be an issue . This also means you can get them pretty damn close to the plants which helps if you dont have alot of space. In my experience though you can't beat the metal halide in veg, hps(and mh is you got one) for flower. I noticed a huge increase in growth and yilld when i moved over the t5's and put in a metal halide when vegging.
They also make 150 ,175, 250 watt metal halide and hps systems. These are great for closets and the bulbs dont produce as much heat as there 400, 600, and 1000 watt counterparts. T
