I think folks make those kind of comments because they are uncomfortable about the interaction they have with the mentally and physically challenged.

Having worked in the medical field for many years, we joked about that stuff between ourselves, but we still had the compassion and respect for these unfortunate people. Count your blessings. Try living with one as your child.
