New Grower Has Some Questions

Hello Everyone!

Well im am new to growing and im new to the community.I have a few questions for everyone. So lets start with the supplies that i have coming in.

Supply List:
Serious Seeds White Russian Feminized -6
Dutch Passion Purple #1 Feminized Seeds - 5
UFO#3 DNA Genetics Lemon Skunk Feminized- 1 Free Seed
Econo 400w HPS with Chrome Reflector
FoxFarm: Ocean Forest Soil, 1.5 cu ft - 3 bag
Perlite, 4 cu ft -1 bag
Mini pH Tester
5 gallon Round Nursery Pot- 4
1 of Fox Farm Soil Nutrient Trio includes- Grow Big, Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom
1 of Fox Farm Soluble Trio Pack includes- Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, Cha Ching

That is everything that i have for now...

Ok so i have a spare room with a closet in it that i will be setting my grow room up in. I will be growing a total of 4 plants. I plan on putting the light in the closet. The first question is... How am i to get ventilation to the plants? I really don't want to set something up the empties the air into my attic... I do have a window in my room that i could keep open with a big fan infront of it moving air into the room. Would this be sufficient enough or does anyone else have suggestions of what to do for this problem? My next question is Do i need a vegetation room and a flowering room? Or can i just keep them under the same 400w HPS for the whole time? If i need to buy another type of light what should it be? Well i will leave you guys with these questions for now and ask some more once Ive got some feedback on these.

For the ventilation: The window idea sounds fine, If it's possible for you to keep the door on your closet open, you'll get plenty of fresh air. Make sure you include a circulation/exhaust fan!!! this is very important for not only pulling fresh air across the plants, but strengthening the stems to avoid bending.

For the two rooms... these will only be necessary if you are planning on vegging plants and flowering plants at the same time to increase rate of harvest. Obviously, you can't have two different light cycles in the same room.

The HPS will work for vegging, but is much more effective for flowering. If funds allow you to, I would get a Metal Halide lamp for vegging. some ballasts are designed to power both types of lights.

That should do it for now. Sounds like you have a pretty nice set up for your first grow. You should start a grow log! Lots of people would love to see your progress. Good luck :thumbsup:

Everything sounds good. A few things to add would be some different sized pots. You want to start small, in like a dixie cup, and work your way up to the 5 gals, transplanting 3-4 times at least.

You will also need an oscillating fan to move air around the closet. This will also help strengthen the stems and keep the plants cooler.

Are you concerned about smell? Without odor control, you will stink up your whole house (the problem is, you will get used to the smell as it gradually increases, but any guest coming in will think that you are breeding skunks). Carbon filters work great, but they will also need an inline fan, coming back to that in a second...

Also, you might want to look into a cooltube or something similar once you start to set up your ventilation.

You really should seal off that closet from light leaks, and have an air intake to allow fresh air in (passively) and have an exhaust to pull hot air out (with an inline fan). Unless you want to get a mini AC unit in that closet... probably not an option. Venting into the attic is really the best way. Or, make the intake and exhaust holes into the closet door.

This is where you would use the inline fan hooked up to the carbon filter. The size of the inline fan and carbon filter will depend on the size of the room and other factors. With only one room you can harvest about once every 3-4 months. With a separate veg room you can harvest about every two months (or however long the flowering times are for those strains).

If you are going to make a veg room, get a MH (metal halide) light, maybe 250w or 400w. You could also use T5 fluoros or CFL's, but just keep in mind the Kelvin rating (the color of the light): around 6500K for veg.

Or, you can just use the HPS throughout the entire grow. It's not as optimal for veg as its color is around 2200-2700K (orange colored versus the blue colored 6500K), but it will get you through without much problem. It's just a little 'overkill' when your using a light with a 3'x3' footprint, and you're plants take up only about 2 square feet for the first month :wtf: Just be careful if you put seedlings under that light, start the light very high up and slowly move it closer.

Might have missed something but that should get you started. I'd really start reading up on growroom setup and different ventilation options because this can make or break your grow. I grew without the proper ventilation once, but stunk up my entire apartment building, and had to always keep my closet door open. Needless to say, when using a street lamp, I didn't need any other light source in that room
