Mounting a T5 unit isn't that hard assuming it's one of the typical high-bay fixtures. Pull your bulbs, unscrew the reflector, put the high-bay against the wall, mark your holes, drill, set anchors, screw panel in, screw reflector back on, re-insert bulbs. Takes about 5-10 minutes if you've got the right tools at hand. I had mine mounted like that to help provide major side lighting. It's what I did when I started working with T5HO.

LEDs can be placed extremely close, assuming you're not pushing out severe power. What a plant doesn't absorb gets reflected or radiated off as heat, and if you give a plant enough light, no matter the cooling, you'll burn the plant.
