I'm confused though about the roots........I'll finish in the 5 gallon pot and he says to go with a bigger pot.......can't I just cut the roots??? and put fresh soil in the 5 gallon again....I'll veg for 3 weeks and then flip the lights.......

Never re-vegged, sorry I'd take Rusty's advice and re-pot bigger. The harvest, trimming and changes in light schedule and nutrients are probably already enough stress for the plant, so that's your best bet IMO. I'm sure a root trim can be done, but maybe doing it later would be better (??)
