The difference, ShastaCoMan, is that no greenhouse gasses are being produced to run these electronic lights, pumps, or fans.

An off-the-grid self-sufficient grow would indeed be cool! I have seen an educational setup like that at my old university; they had a windmill as well as a trailer-mounted array of photovoltaic cells and batteries, and were using them to power several 400w lamps and an irrigation pump. Together they were powerful enough that we were able to throw small concerts using their equipment and it would still run the lights through the night when we shut down in the early morning.
