He ran his own home made LED against outdoor grows and his LEDs won in terms of looks, smell potency and yield, IIRC.
He's a legal grower in Hawaii, BTW. The sun is real good there.

I just chose, and then cross bred,
Strains that love to see a led.
And I use hydro nutes in coco.
Though dirt farmers called me loco
That alone gives me an edge.
My light rivals da sun, for buds.
And beats ol' sol, hands down, for veg!

The down side?

My HI Homie III cross is not even viable outdoors.
The buds are too fat and dense to shed water properly.
If they get spritzed, they retain the water and it stagnates and rots the bud.

The up-front cost is very high now. Most of the lamps you see hawked are getting mighty close to snake-oil territory. BUt if you can get your hands on some serious LED gear you will see that it cango toe to toe with HIDs and be a serious contender.
