    When all of a sudden.........

Found I had a unique problem today. My clones have not been looking well, but heck been having no troubles for years with 100% success. Had to look closer, and all of a sudden, nothing is taking, not a root bump on any of them. Thinking back this coinicided with a new batch of 'clone juice' that I use. Being that nothing else has changed it is pretty easy to figure out I must have gotten a bad batch. No problem right, just get some new stuff.

Well not so fast. The stuff I use does not put batches on the bottles. BUMMER!!! I had to switch brands because I have no idea which batch my stuff came from. No, I will not say what/which brand. I have had success with them for many, many years.

I sure would like to see in my morning perusal that "Clonex" is good stuff. Never used it, but am behind 3 weeks now. My supply store suggested it. They too were concerned that no lots or numbers were on the bottles.

    Have a good evening

I've been using Schultz Takeroot Hormone powder for the last decade. Works just fine if I don't cake the powder on the clone. (use sparingly) I used a gel a couple of times with sparrodic results, and always go back to the Schultz. When using gels I always scrape the excess off. Too much, and it creates a barrier preventing root formation.

Do you dip the clone in the jar, or do you apply to the clone with a brush or stick? If dipping directly in the jar you risk contamination of the contents.

Do you remove cutting from the mother plant and set it aside, or do you place the cutting in a glass of water so no air will travel up the stem? (a fairly important step)

There is a PM function...But since the link hasn't been offered, I'm not sure if it's ok to use.

Bomb as in great(for me it works better than any powder I have used, especially when using an aerorooting system, ya just add it to the water and in 2-5 days ya got major roots depending on the strain). I put my fresh cuttings in water directly after cutting. I use a shot glass to dip them in so the bottle doesn't get contaminated. I dip and roll upto the second juncture I cut away from the stem of the clone.

    To answer the questions.

I take the juice and put a small amount in a different container. I get my cubes ready. I use a new blade, make the cut, and put in the juice, then the cube, then trim as needed. That all goes in a domed heated tray.

It just had to be a bad batch.

Well, I am always open to try something new. How else can we advance if we don't try?

Glad to hear you potentially ID'd the problem.

I forgot to mention...I also scrape the bottom onch or two of the cutting down to the cambium layer (just under the 'bark' where the roots will develop from) prior to dipping in the rooting hormone. Otherwise, the hormone has to absorb through the bark before getting to where it's needed.
Disclaimer: Do not damage all your cuttings trying to learn this simple technique...

One quick scrape (not a slice) with the scissors on each side of the cutting to get to the cambium layer. Requires a gentle yet firm touch. You can practice "the scrape" on an unwanted male or a stalk of celery, till you get the hang of it. Y'all know that ribbon for wrapping gifts...the kind with ribs all along it's length? You pull the ribbon between your thumb and the scissors, and it curls-up...? Basically the same type of motion.

Drops a couple of days off the rooting process.

Yeah, that is cool the way sometimes the roots just grow out of the sides when you do that. Definitely a positive thing to do.
