250w in a closet too much?

So the gist is, I have a little cfl setup and want to upgrade to a HPS light.

Is 250w in a closet with no vents (unless you count the cracks around the sliding doors), plus an oscillating fan too much heat? Should I use a 150w HPS instead?

    Thanks! :hippy:

HPS bulbs are hot. You will need some kind of a ventilation system.

concurred. it can be done, but you might have to deal with some high temps. can you keep the door open or anything?

Well, I could open the door but it would be hard as the closet is in my office which I'm in allot. So, sealing for light would be hard. Maybe if I can make some sort of tent inside the closet... hmm.

Even with the 150w..you'll still need ventilation.... 150's what I run.... check my log out...

250 without venting will be waaaay too hot.... the temps will just keep climbing!

@monny nice to hear from ya! i've been following your grow log since the start.

my closet is about double the size of yours in length and about the same depth. it has 2 sliding doors. unfortunately no attic access...

do you think because its double the length i could get away with a 150w HPS + oscillating fan?

maybe i can make some sort of baffle to stop the light and i can keep the sliding door cracked a little to allow air exchange.

Excellent man! good to know others are checking it out!

    No man,

without venting the heat will slowly but gradually build up! and I wouldnt recommend you leave the door open....

What I would do If I was you is... as your room is quite large.... invest in one of those small air conditioners...looks like a small radiator on wheels....you know the ones I'm talking about? cost around £120

and invest in a 250w - 400w sodium depending on how many plants your gonna grow....

250w - will be ideal for 2 plants 1.5 sq ft each... think they put out 28,000 lumens 'ish'

400w - will be good for 3-4 plants 1.5 sq ft each...and these are 40,000 'ish' I think?.... might have some heat troubles with the 400w though....maybe go with the 250w... and add cfl's if you think its necessary...

You can also look into getting another sliding door where you can make intake and exhaust holes. Sometimes you can find them in second hand shops for cheap. Then you can run a 250w or 400w HPS with a cooltube and fan. I managed to keep the temps just in range, at about 85 F, with a 400w HPS, cooltube, carbon filter and 129 cfm fan in a 22.5in x 22.5in. x 67.5in. closet.
