My bet is a fungus gnat. I am VERY inexperienced, but I backed off on the amount of watering I was doing when I had them show up. The little bastards didn't survive that and the plants did better than before. A black fly (fungus gnat) wont do anything directly to your leaf, though, as I understand it they (larva) can damage roots.

The other bug I've had was a beetle. Just the one little bugger. I noticed some small leaf gnawing and looked for days to find the cause. It was not too greedy and didn't bring the relatives, but it had to go. It had a wonderful camouflage that blended very nicely with the soil. I found it when it dropped from the plant to the soil. Had I not noticed the motion it would have continued its buffet. I can only imagine it would drop from the plant and remain still on my previous attempts to find it.

Good luck and bounteous harvest to you!
