The Littleton City Council tonight will consider regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries, including limiting the number of them in the city.

The recommendations from the city attorney's office include requiring that the dispensaries be at least 1,000 feet from a school, 500 feet from a licensed child-care facility and 1,000 feet from another dispensary.

If passed, the ordinance would also limit to four the number of dispensaries in Littleton at any one time. That could pose a problem because there are five dispensaries in operation and nine more have received their sales-tax licenses to sell medical marijuana.

City Attorney Suzanne Staiert said dispensaries that were open as of Dec. 22 can remain open. At that time, she said there were only four dispensaries in operation.

However, a fifth dispensary, CannaMart on East Arapahoe Road, is open now. Owner Stan Zislis said he started selling medical marijuana there Dec. 24 but requested a final building inspection two days earlier.

However, the others who received their licenses and did not open by Dec. 22 are out of luck, Staiert said.

"You had to be operational of as of the 22nd of December," Staiert said. "You won't be able to apply until one is dropped."
