first time growing, need some help
i dont want to buy anymore so im thinking of turning a small cabinet into a grow box, the only problem is that it is made of wood. would a layer of heat resistant material prevent it from catching fire?
also what is a powerful yet silent fan?

Why not use old computer cases like for the desktops the server ones are good:jointsmile:
use those little fans for the comp in there surge protector screwed up to the top of the thing lights form that plants below now :hippy: worrying on fire plus you can get those almost anywhere for practically nothing xD pick em up from the dump for free lol they have assloads always some place everyone knows to pick those up
you can get some pretty good stuff from those little boxes:thumbsup: Plants obviously wont be able to grow that big lol juse use some of those power saving lights the coiled ones they do have clears you will get stuff from em and those things kick out little to no heat:hippy:

don't wast your time trying to grow in a computer case.
what are your worries about fire? i've stuffed 18+ 23W CFLs in a cardboard box without any problems. if you plan on going with HID then you will want adequate cooling, but unless the bulb is making consistant contact with the box you have no worries about fire, unless you jack up your electric wiring in which case wood or cardboard could possible go up in flames.
just use common sense.
good growing!

Unless it's getting around 300 degrees on the wood itself you really have no worries but by then your plants would be dead so I'd assume you'd shut the lights off lol.

i was thinking of using a computer case at first but figured it was too small. ill still use some heat resistant material just to make sure bur now i wont be paranoid when i leave home.
i basically have a blank check to build this thing so ill be able to get some nice equipment. any of u guys have suggestions? right now im mainly looking for a powerful yet quiet fan and also, if possible, an energy efficient one.

I use an S&P TD100x inline fan(4") rated 130CFM, knocks the temp of my box down from 115 to 80. My box is 2'x2'x4'tall. Look around the forums and local grow shops, there's some great brands, but make sure to remember to go big or go home lol. You can always get a fan that's larger than you require and put it on a fan speed controller to keep it quieter. Basically inline fans are quieter than blowers but more expensive for the same CFM rating.

you want to exchange the air in your grow space every 5 minutes at the least, preferably every 1-2. as RT mentioned, go bigger than needed.
