I never saw a sodium lamp like that, but it would NOT be better for flowering, I wouldn't think ... the 'red' spectrum of a typical high-pressure sodium lamp, is mimicking the red wavelengths resulting from the Autumn sun, sitting lower in the sky ... 'imitate nature' :smokin:

Dutch Pimp has that right...less stretch, but I worry that when you pay sooo much more for a bulb, you won't replace it as soon as you should. If using HPS you will probably have better results with using cheap reagular bulbs and changing them often.

are you refferring to CMH (ceramic metal halide) bulbs?

So in an instance where someone was using a 400w hps for flowering and had t8 6500k shop lights positioned on the side like so (below), is this not a good idea?

I use the Hortilux Super HPS Eye bulb that has still the high values of Red light it normally would but with the added levels of blue. I like the results and spent 70 bucks or so for the bulb (400w) and that company states to replace every 18 months of use and I use a light meter to test. I use a cheapo MH for veg and haven't tried a high buck version of mh but if the lumens are still good then it can't hurt. If anyone has a strain that they have grown out a few times and then changed to the more pricey light bulbs and made a log or just showed pics of the results I would dig that.... and yeah side lighting rules and you can mix the bulbs if your too worried about adding to stretch or limiting it. Either way nice thread :thumbsup: oh and lose the aluminum and paint the area under the plants white or use mylar it will help without the hot spots that aluminum can make.

Couldn't tell you where I read it but,..

MH for all stages,.. OK

HPS for all stages,.. GOOD

MH for Vegitative growth and HPS for flowering,.. BETTER

MH AND HPS for all stages after rooting,.. BEST

If this is true, I'd have to assume running a higher blue spectrum light that is supplimenting the HPS would be somewhere between BETTER and BEST.

Thanks for the replies everyone. To clarify Im talking about Dual Arc Lamps, Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium tubes are combined into one glass. So it would seem Iâ??m not losing any of the red or orange just picking up blue to go with it. Just wondering if they would be better for veg and or flowering?? Iâ??m not worried about cost as much as I am about quality and yield. I will replace bulbs when need no matter what they cost me. Two 1000W bulbs will cost me $287, if I get 4 bulbs to switch out it will cost me like $350= 2 Sunmaster MH Conversion Lamp - 600W and 2 Sunmaster Super HPS Deluxe 1000W.:rasta:

check the specs on those dual arc lamps!...some of them require 220 volt ballasts...:stoned:
