Need a new doctor
I had such a frustrating visit with my doctor today, I need to get it off my chest.
I have a qualifying condition, and my specialist believes that mmj could help me. My condition is treatable by conventional means, but I can not take narcotic pain relievers due to allergies and I have to take mass quantities of regular pain relievers to make a difference. My specialist looked into it and directed me to the NM Dept of Health website. I filled out my parts of the paperwork, took it to his office, he filled out his and faxed it for me. I was feeling pretty optimistic that I'd found a solution, but since it is a pain condition, the state asked for a recommendation from my PCP. I saw her today, and her reaction left me speechless.
She said that cannabis is highly addictive, will mess up my brain, she wouldn't even recommend it for cancer patients, my specialist doesn't know what he's talking about, and that she would rather prescribe me morphine. MORPHINE?! She was condescending and rude, but fully prepared to write me a prescription that will "tear up your stomach, but you can take medication for that". She didn't ask me a single question about my condition or what my specialist and I had discussed or have tried in the past. She disregarded what I told her about my previous reactions to pain medication. Well, she finally did offer an alternative which was to take the time off and meditate. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have undergone surgery for this if I could meditate it away and taking that much time off of work is not an option anyway.
I've contacted someone that I think can help, but has anyone else been in this situation? I would have accepted it if she said that she didn't think it would help, but her objections were not valid. If she's truly worried about addiction, why bring up morphine? She even told me that its because it's illegal even though I had the paperwork from the specialist and the NM Department of Health.
I just don't get it.sofrustrated Reviewed by sofrustrated on . Need a new doctor I had such a frustrating visit with my doctor today, I need to get it off my chest. It doesn't matter what the qualifying condition is. The attitude of the primary care physician is inexcusable. I would be getting a different doc for myself if that's her level of knowledge. My PCP wouldn't recommend for me, however, she isn't against MMJ and has recommended it for a couple of her really serious cases. I went through Montana Caregiver's Network to get my recommendation (obviously you will have to go through the NM equivalent).
