    430W HPS Electricty Cost Question!

How much energy will my light use?
An average lighting system will increase your electricity cost about $8 to $20 per month. The exact amount depends on the wattage of the system and the number of hours operated. To calculate your cost, multiply the bulb wattage X the number of hours of operation and divide by 1000. This figure is the number of kilowatt-hours of electricity used. (Example: a 400 watt lamp running for 18 hours will use 7.2 kilowatt-hours). Check your power bill for the cost of each kilowatt-hour. Then multiply the number of kilowatt-hours used by the cost of a kilowatt-hour (K/hr) to figure the cost to run your light for that many hours.
Alright, so I have had this 430W HPS laying around for a few months and have just really thought about using it. Problem comes with electricity costs. So I found a conversion table for the cost and did the numbers. Now I sha'll put them down here and can somebody please confirm or correct me if I'm right/wrong.

Alright....Well I checked the recent light bill and I used 742kw hours this month and the bill was $102. So, I divided the 102 into the 742 and it came out to .137 rounded to .14. So that means it costs me fourteen cents for each kw hour correct?

K, now that I have that .14 I was told to multiply the wattage I will be using (which is 430HPS + 50W for ballast) 480W with the number of hours I will be using divide by 1000 resulting in kw(hrs) of electricity used. I will be running at 18/6. That ended up coming out to 8.64 (480x18hrs divide 1000). Then it is said to multiply the cost of each kw(hr) which is .14 cents to the kw(hrs) used which is 8.64.

That then gives me 1.21. So if I did this correct, it will cost me an extra 1.21 a day to run that light, correct? So roughly a little over 30 a month.....If I did the math wrong then I apologize! Somebody please help reassure my statement!

    430W HPS Electricty Cost Question!

I think you're right in the ballpark! When I added my 400, the bill bumped about $25/mo.

You are being very generous with the amount allowed for the ballast, my 400 HPS only pulls a total of 410 watts. It would need to be among the worlds worst ballasts to consume an extra 50!

    430W HPS Electricty Cost Question!

    sounds about right...

    I checked mine: 462 kw hours divided by $47.19 = $0.10 kw

I appreciate the feedback my friends....I was just paranoid on to HOW much extra it would cost a month. Was expecting a lot more before I did the math. I need to keep that conversion chart for later references!

must spread some reputation around before giving it to Dutch and EvilC again!
