    Pruning

Should I prune leaves that obviously wont survive? Anyone that's been following my saga should know that my lower leaves are all shot to hell so should I just go ahead and cut them away so the plant doesn't have to put any further energy into them?

Generally, it's better to let the leaves fall off or IF they pull off easy with a sight tug. The plant will draw what it needs from the leaf and discard it.
