    hydroton alternative

Anyone have an alternative to hydroton? It is not available in my area and just looking for something else to use. Also, does anyone use pots that are not net pots for hydroponic growing?

    Hydrotron is a royal pain.
    I'll never use it again.
It beats rockwool, but not by much.

I've used coco coir in netpots and had excellent results.

You don't have to have netpots either, just drill plenty of holes in a plastic container and set it about an inch above a bucket of nutes with an airstone in it.
The popping bubbles splash the pot bottom and the roots grow into the water.
Check my photo albums for details.

    Aloha,
    Weezard

Well if you cant get hydroton in your area, chances are you cant get anything else either,
If you dont have access to the right material you cant do a proper job,
If i was in that position id use soil

I have heard you can use just regular mid sized river rocks. Never tried it myself though.

River rocks are a very poor substitute. If you need rocks you want lava rocks for a gass grill. Take a hammer and bust them up so they are small pieces like you want. It also gets the sharp edges down. There you go a little piece of Hawaii.

Hey Loc...I want to try the Lava rocks...just for shits and giggles.

But, honestly...go with what is readily available. Just my advice. Hydrotron isn't great anyways. I am using COCO 6 inch cubes now. WAYYYYY better.

Marty I want to try the coco. Been looking at it for awhile. I use a sphagnum moss for mothers and it sounds simular but hard to get. Easy to take care of.

I'm starting my first grow. After lots of research I've decided on the sure to grow inserts for my ebb n grow system. If you get a chance look on youtube for sure to grow and it'll show all of the products. Like I said my first grow so I cant tell you good or bad yet but I'll know come mid jan at harvest (sour diesel & G-13). cant wait. good luck on your search.

So i have never personally used it. But there is medium that is very similar in function to hydroton. Its called Sure To Grow. Its made by the people who produce the CAP Ebb and Gro bucket system. They claim its the shit......
They actually have some very insightful videos posted on google video if u just search CAP Ebb and Gro or Sure to Grow.
    hope this helps.
