Is Attic sufficient-heat wise to grow ?
Hi there guy's, I'm new to the site and growing in general so I'm here for some of your knowledge
I havn' got any growing equipment just yet but I've been pricing it over the past couple of months and I'm just about ready to purchase the tent, lights ect...
But for now before I do anything I'd just like to ask you guy's is the attic sufficient to do your growing ?
I got up in the attic the other day and there is plenty of space if I get flooring put in which I have already priced. But in Dublin as you know it's getting very cold around this time so I know the plants will have heat from the lights but when the lights are out will the plants survive in a very cold attic ?
The attic is the only real space I have so I'm hoping the answer is yes but thought I'd ask before I commit to anything. I have real pain paying big bucks for crappy deals these days' so fingers crossed

maybe worth sticking a thermometer up there and visit it or record it with a camera to see what the temps are like
if its too cold maybe just get a cheap argos heat and throw it up there with a timer
how many lights are u using?
it really depends on ur house

Is Attic sufficient-heat wise to grow ?
Hi there, and thanks for the reply.
To be honest the house is a very very warm house even on cold nights even without the gas on, but as I said I just popped up the other day and it was during the day and it was cold, as like as if was out on the street.
At the min all I have is a light bulb in my atticbut I priced some flooring and a ladder and I'm going to get the chap to put some electrics up there too as in sockets.
The set up is costing me in the region of â?¬600, that's according to my local grow shop.
That is for a tent that the guy tells me "should" hold 4 plants. 2 side reflectors, which I don't know what is for really (noob here ) the balast and a 600w light.
I'm also worried about the smell but I see extracor fans are very expensive so would just a normal fan be sufficent with some duct leading to the vent in the attic ?
To me this seems quite daunting but I feel I have to do it as I've been putting it off some years now and being paying out crazy cash for scabby deals.
I just don't want to fork out the cash and make a total bags of it and wasted the cash which is hard to come by.
Cheers again for the reply

First off i wouldnt be buying any kit off hydro shops in ireland bud, they're about double the price of the shops in the uk. Make a list of what you need and then price it online, its safe out and if you get it all at once the delivery will only be 20snots. I recommend 3countieshydro, i dealt with them and had my stuff in 3 days. No need for a tent either if you're going in the attic 'coz light leaks wont be an issue. Make up a frame out of 2x2s and cover it with builders plastic. Also I bought a kitchen extractor fan, a really powerful one, from b&q yesterday. Cost 80 yoyos, i wouldnt dream of buying another inline fan they're shite
Attics are vented and uninsulated so it will drop to a few degrees above whatever it is outside so a heater with a thermostat would be the right job for you.
Your obviously going for hps, That will keep them nice and warm in the daylight hrs. You dont want the temp dropping below 17 at night. 15 rock bottom, any lower will stunt your plants. I try to keep a constant temp of 20 but its difficult, and im using a bedroom in a well insulated house. I think 600w is a bit of overkill if your only planning on 4 plants, BUT if your thinking about expanding your grow in the future, go for it
Anyways keep us posted on whatever you decide on, and happy growing,
Enjoy:thumbsup:

corkboys right about the irish rip offs, apart from ordering it maybe worth hopping on the train to belfast for some good deals.
also thanks corkboy for the b&q fan idea and the 3countieshydro recommendation

Thanks for the info guy's it's much appreciated
Corkboyhigh, I hear what your saying about the price of the equipment here in Ireland compared to the Uk. I was a little worried about leaving some sort of a trail behind so I was opting for the cash rout, just buy it in a shop here and be done with it, but yeah like most things here in Ireland they (shops) are ripping us off.
I checked the temp in the attic the other morning and it was down to 6 celcious. And to be honest, from having a closer look around the attic there are at least 6 large vents so I don't think even a heater will do the job
I had it all planned, getting the floor put down and the electrics done but I feel I've been dealt a blow and have to look at some other rout to go down to get this grow under way.
I really don't want to have a big suspicious grow tent in my house and I'm really stuck for space so I'm thinking something along the lines of getting some big wood effect wardrobe and putting the tent in there and doing the grow from with-in my house. I really didn't want to do this and the attic was perfect but looks like I might have to.
The thing that is bugging me big time about doin the grow in the house, the smell. Can the smell be elimenated completely ? Via a certain type of fan ? I see in some of the tents they are designed to have a fan inside them.
What you guy's reckon on the smell situation ? I don't mind drilling a hole in my wall and putting a metal grill on it to let the smell out, but the extractor fan, put this inside the tent too ?
Cheers again guy's
One last thing, the chap in the shop where he wants me to buy all the materials, tells me I should start off my first grow with "Rino" seeds as it's more durable and easier to grow, would this be correct ?
