Your theory is right but you should lower the light between your plants and use a cool tube to get it close. This will light up the lower branches and provide you the extra bud you are looking for. A 400 w HPS is only really good for a max of 24? of circumference light. Most experts are in agreement that light intensity diminishes exponentially fast.
For example:
A 400-watt MH from 0? to 12? is about the same luminance say 55000
Same light at 24? the luminance is now about 30000

Still good

Same light at 36? the luminance is now about 1200

Worthless

It??s up to you, people who grow pounds on every plant light, top & all sides. With that much light your plants could effectively process Co2 and really benefit from the use.

Lighting the underside of leafs is not recommended, there is a better use for that light.
