Football fans were being asked to help locate a 16-year-old girl who went missing while out walking her grandparents' dog.

Detectives are investigating reports that Kirsty Chapman had been in contact with a 50-year-old man over the internet before she vanished from Plymouth on Thursday afternoon.

Now police will make an appeal for information about the teenage college student during Plymouth Argyle's home game against Cardiff City.

Kirsty's grandmother reported her missing when she failed to return home from her walk, and several hours later the dog was found on its own about half a mile away.

Meanwhile, about 70 officers continued to carry out searches and speak to people in the Stoke and Ford areas of Plymouth where the teenager went missing.

Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman PC Sharon Newman said: "We have carried out some house-to-house inquiries, but we don't really know where she went missing and we have had no real positive sightings.

"We don't know how long the dog had been on her own, and the dog could have wandered back from some other area."

She confirmed that samples had been taken from the dog in case it could provide DNA evidence, but so far no results have been obtained.

Police have revealed that Kirsty was a user of internet chat rooms and said they were looking into who she spoke to on-line as part of their inquiries.

Det Supt Nigel Boulton, who is leading the investigation, said: "We do know she went onto the internet and used it for messaging and searching worldwide. That is certainly one of our areas of focus."
