I used to smoke all day for several years when I was younger and even though I mixed up the varieties my tolerance went way up there and the high would only last for 20 minutes or so no matter what I smoked. This lead to me smoking all the time nonstop.

At some point I figured I had to cut down because it was just getting too expensive of a habit. I quit for a year and a half and then when I started up again I made a couple of simple rules to follow. Keep it varied with strains, types of hash and smoking methods and no smoking in the morning and during the day(that basically means no smoking for the first 8-9 hours of the day). Now I'm high as a kite for 2-3 hours every time I toke depending on what I smoke and how I smoke it.

I also notice the nuances in the different strains and the hash and charas manufacturing methods much more than before when I was smoked pretty much nonstop. This has been working for me for the last 8 years or so and my tolerance has stayed stable at the low end of the scale.
Best reply I've seen yet. My tolerance get's high when I do a couple things.. smoke multiple times a day as often as every hour, 'wake n bake' and then smoke all day, and smoking alot at once just for the hell of it.

Waking up and smoking proved to be bad because it never gave my mind time to adjust after waking up. I'd wake up get high & I'd pretty much be high all day. When I wake up and give my body/mind time to adjust I always get higher when I smoke. Days when I have a long day without smoking and I smoke during night time I always get the highest and it even lasts longer. I started smoking 10 yrs ago and have been on and off for about 8 of them. Even til this day I can smoke daily and still get high as a kite if I just wait til later in the day to smoke!!

Another thing is I smoke smaller portions now because when you roll big fat joints it forces your body to tolerate the substance more so it increases your tolerance faster. I dont roll one gram joints anymore. I'll take bong hits, bowl hits, or I'll roll .5 in a joint and put it out halfway if Im by myself. Not smoking too much per session helps keep your tolerance down.

It's all about moderation and if you ever wan't to enjoy things in life if you have to do it in that manner. Marijuana can get bland very quick if you ABUSE it. I didn't learn how to have balance with my hobby until I was 22(a yr ago) and Im still working to keep it like that and it can be hard. Like you said you have to set rules.. discipline yourself. Marijuana isn't supposed to be your life just a positive part of it.
