Leaf yellow and rusty?
Looks like old die off and maybe getting wet or too humid sitting down in the tray. Just around the bottom. top of whatever your plants are in should be about the top of your tray. The humidity or wet and a 400 could burn them. Since the new growth looks real good I would say trim the old. When an old leaf turns half yellow it is time for it to go.
Please inspect the leaves for bugs just to make sure and don't keep old leaves around. They rot and cause mould and all kind of problems.

Leaf yellow and rusty?
I see your "friend" is using RO water. I'm not a hydro guy by any means, but I have seen enough posts on here about RO water lacking trace nutrients. Does the GH 3 part have sufficient calcium and magnesium? Most of the hydro grows I have read about on here use CalMag (the product) as an additive. Just a thought.
It could be a ph problem in addition, or seperate of any deficiency. Do you know what the ph of the solution is? Do you know if it gradually climbs between res changes? How often is the res changed? What ppm are the nutes being run at?

You can go to any cvs or walgreens and get Epsom salt, It is Ca and Mg, your plant has distinct signs of lacking Mg., Unless something is else is wrong like ph that seems to be the problem, the curling tips and green veins also leans toward a deficiency, dont cut anything!!!, if anything wait until they fall off, or give them a light tug and see if they pop off, they still help the plant even if its dieing, but u dont want dead material lying around either. Use a little less then a table spoon per 2 gallons, less if your worried and wait a couple days, u wont notice a change in the dead leafs, but the rest of the plant should grow normally, if it continues then add more. Before anything check your PH!! it could be a simple PH issue.
