    Awwww thrip shit!

    I found a little bad news in the clone dome this morning.

    [attachment=o229321]

    Yup, thrip doo doo. The good news is that so far it was only on one?.the others look clean. It did cause me to examine the 2 mothers that I??m keeping and I found a very few spots that I??ve removed.

    I put covers over the pots as per Ms Stinky??s instruction

    [attachment=o229322]

    I??ll get some diatomaceous earth a.s.a.p.

    The question is really about covering the tops of the pots. I don??t know if they could still damp off (I imagine not?but I??m guessing). So how long can I get away with the pot covers, and what would be possible ramifications.

    Also I found what appears to be a pyrithum spray (not a fogger) and wondered if it??s advisable to spray directly on plants.

    Many thanks to all that have posted here?.making problems so much easier to identify.

    ....I teach, I preach, I tried to raise you up correctly and where do I find you? In the "plant problem" section! And with an STD no less! (silly thirp dilemma) :wtf:

    I am such a perfect grower, I never have problems, (I couldn't even type that with a straight face ) so I'm not sure what you should do.

    Actually the pot covers are a great idea (kissing up to Sinky) and your plantlets look big enough that damping off should not be a problem. But you want to uncover the pots daily to alow any excess moisture to escape and to check your stems anyway. As you know the d.earth will be used in place of the pot covers, so trapped moisture will not be an issue after that. Or after you erradicate the thirps. Whichever comes first.

    I honestly don't know about pyrethrum spray. I'm old and the last bug killer spray I found to work was DDT, but I understand that's hard to come by these days. (that was a joke people, don't use that shit)

    I'm sure someone who knows more about the pyrethrum spray will chime in.
    Hope you get it under control, cause we need Horseman Rocking.

    You know I probably could have even posted this in the basic grow section. But my bookie told me that you had $1000 down in Vegas that I would show up here?..so, just because you have always been so kind to me?.this is the only way that I could possibly pay you back. Good luck at the casino.

    That clarifies a few (but not all) of your posts. Let this be a lesson to all, DDT is increasingly hard to find.

    I don??t think that spider mites are indigenous here, but if all those little flyey things outdoors (when I tie up the tomatoes) are thrips?.well, I suppose that I??d better arm myself for the present and ??the next time?.

    Always a pleasure my friend,

    Hey , I was trying to respond and bumped myself offline, somehow.

    I tried Foxfarm "Don't Bug Me" (pyrethrum) on some fungus gnats with zero effect. Drenched 'em with it. They'd swim around in it for awhile and then just fly away.

    No Pest Strips do work, used as W. suggests. I kill the whole fan / exhaust circuit and leave one in there overnight, once a week if critters visit. :thumbsup:

    I also replaced my paper pot covers with Reflectix ones (again, a W. suggestion) which handle better and are waterproof. I got better results by letting freshly watered soil dry out for a day before replacing them. The covers keep that top layer of soil too moist and attractive to the gnats, and they find their way under the covers somehow, anyway.

    No Pest Strips are the way to go here. They have them at Lowes for $6 or something. I found some spider mites on a mother plant and had some fungus gnats feasting on my root rot I got over the summer, so I got a no pest strip and put it in my room, came in the next day and all the bugs were dead. StinkyAttic posted some info suggesting they were toxic if you hang out in your room a lot and don't have good ventilation, but I am not scared. :jointsmile:

    guys I tried just about every methed out there.... Spinosad works and its organic Amazon.com: Monterey Spinosad Organic Garden Insect Spray - Pint Concentrate #LG6150: Home Improvement

    Monterey, PT, Garden Insect Spray, Contains Spinosid, Controls All 5 Stages Of A Caterpillar, Use On Outdoor Ornamentals, Lawns, Vegetables, Fruit Trees, Citrus, & Sone Fruit, Etc To Control Caterpillars, Leafminers, Thrips, Borers, Foliage Feeding Worms & More, Ormi Approved.
    Guys.... water your plants....spray the bottom top of leaves along with the top of soil....get a paper plate put over top the rootball/planter for 1 week... this will break the life cycle of the thrip... stops the hatchlings

    Whoa, lookit?? those rep stripes out there. Green, as far as the eye can see. I feel like a lowly corporal getting ??schooled? by a veritable sea of generals.
    And invariably ??scolded? by oldmac??then, what??s new about that.

    Pest strip????????.??check
    Rotenone Pyrethrum???.not in California
    Dichlorvos???????.??.banned everywhere
    Trash can??????????check

    And, of course, a total bonehead move on my part. Instead of typing in Dichlorvos on the web search?..I entered clitoris by mistake. Oh well, no regrets, I did manage to learn a few things in the process.

    So as always, ??in Podunk? we make do with what we can get. One more picture so that you know that us country boys can be downright cagey when we??ve a mind to.

    [attachment=o229406]

    They??ll never know what hit em?? when I tippy toe in later with that trash can.

    Thanks Vaped,

    So the egg inside the plant tissue is what accounts for the leaf miner effect. (that??s a question)

    And thanks for the tip on Spinosad?..It??s ??on the way?

    If I add the numbers correctly??the cycle could be as long as 15 days. Well, what??s a mother to do.

    Horsemanrocks?..out
