ROBBED, NEED SECURITY / THEFT PROTECTION IDEAS
So, I was robbed the other night, pretty much lost my entire crop for the season. I can't even explain how I felt when I saw my big beautiful plants gone.... if you have tried it you know what I mean.
I grow on my field, about 100 yards from my house and thought I was safe because no one ever comes by and it's a 1/2 mile trek over rocky terrain to even get here without coming up my driveway which is a dead end.
SO, I need help and ideas on security. If anyone has ideas for cheap do-it-yourself security measures please let me know. So far I have been thinking simple trip wires connected to something that will somehow alert me. I could also get some motion sensors but not sure how to avoid them being set off by dogs/cats or wild animals. I need to stay pretty cheap but would like to hear any and all ideas or links to any pages that has this kind of info.
Everything I can find is about staying hidden, well it's too late for that, I need theft protection / security for my legal garden.

well first things first... if they weren't visible from the road or anyone just passing by, then you have to consider the possibility of someone you told about your plot. Razor wire is cheap, and effective in some situations (going a bit extreme, lol)

You can utilize bouncing betties (S-mines). Made in Germany during WW2, there is a built-in mechanism to propel the mine 3-4 feet in the air, detonating around the thoracic cavity of the individual....
just a thought!

Dead bolts and window locks. Ouside, regular old motion sensor accent lighting, maybe a doggie or 2, a handgun or 12 gauge shotgun. Security sytems are good, unless police show up for alarm and find stash. Deadbolts and metal, reinforced doors

Thought you might want a response from someone who actually read and understood your post.
I'm in a similar situation.
Here's what I'm doing about it.
Bought a 12v. tractor battery and a charger for it.
(100yards? you might need a solar charger, or a little red wagon for swapping batteries.)
It will run the $40 car alarm that is triggered by an rf field type mass detector.
The pretrigger, when approached, beeps a horn.
No wanna wake the neighbors, so no horn.
I feed it to a 300W. inverter instead.
The inverter drives an electric cattle fence!
The fence driver is wired to a 5' X 10' metal dog kennel that I grow in.

Yeah, I'm pissed! Lost one of my breeders.
Thinking about a DVR and 4 cameras just to see them get zapped.
If they get past that, there's an inner perimeter sensor and a shock sensor that will blast the siren.
The neighbors understand what that means. and one of 'em said he'll deliver da buggah to my door, bleeding profusely should they try to exit past him.
The rest will just call 911.
Great to be legal, ain't it?
I power mine with an extention cable that runs from the house.
If unplugged. the battery will run everything for months
(I could just buy 2 batteries and keep one on charge n swap 'em every month, but, I'm too lazy for that.)
Besides, this way, I will know immediately if it gets messed with.
I put my old computer UPS out there.
When unplugged, it beeps! And keeps producing power for about 24 hours with that small a load, (just a trickle charger).
Da beepin noise used to bodder me when we had a power outage.
Turns out, it's a feature!
Ya need details, I'll take pictures.
As for dogs?
Feh! My 90 pound, wee beastie slept through both thefts.
Neighbor suggested chaining my dog to da pen.
Bad idea!
Anyone who will steal your meds, will poison your dog.
Then, I'd HAVE to do something rash.
Anyone left standing would probably go to jail.
That about what your looking for?
Aloha,
Weezard

ROBBED, NEED SECURITY / THEFT PROTECTION IDEAS
ive had an idea for something like this for awhile. its a non lethal form but would scare the hell out of me if this happened. ok so your deterant is a shitload of firecrackers and the way it is set off is by crushwire (used by the pieces of shit overseas to set off Improvised explosive devices). Crushwire is pretty self explanatory but for the non military peeps i will elaborate. Its basically two pieces of bare wire buried just an inch or so under the ground a few centimeters apart one on top of the other, when pressurre is applied via some little(or big) douche stepping on it. when the two wires touch it completes the circut which sends an electrical pulse to a device that lights the firecrackers also hidden in the ground and therefore scraing the ever living fuck out of anyone who happens to get caught in the middle of this little ordeal and probably keeping them from ever coming back. the beauty of it is no one dies and you dont go to jail for murder, and they most likely will have no idea what happened or how. You have the power source connected to a switch or remote of some sort so when you go visit your garden you just push the button and it turns off the system and either reactivates after a certain ammount of time or is manually turned back on the choice is really up to you. so heres the scenario some little douche rolls up in your garden steps on the completly invisible wire which can not be avoided due to the fact that it is thin inexpensive and can be buried everywhere then firecrackers or anything else you hook up to this will start blowing out of the ground all around this piece of shit. the douche will consequently wet himself and run like hell and not have any idea what just happened or how to avoid it next time.
This sounds funny but this kind of system is killing our friends and family members over seas everyday, and unfortunalty i personally know it works so if you would like some help on how to set it up or implement it let me know. I have all kinds of high tech solutions for stuff like this.

sorry meant to ask if you have a fence or anything up? is the area big enough that you could put up a privacy fence, its much easier to set traps if you only give them one way to enter, also if you had a fence up you could put up cameras and other deterants like previously discussed. im not so sure a cattle fence will be very effective because if someone got hit by it they would now exactly how to defeat it next time, such as gloves too easy to bypass. the trick is to keep your attack not only secret but unavoidable. which we can def figure out.
