Yeah I'll give the pope one thing he conceded the genesis vs evolution arguement. "Thank god" har har. Too bad he's dying he was a pretty smart man for his position. (considering the previous "popes" intellectual bearings and opposition to all things scientific)

yeah, hes a good guy, i seen a biography about him on tv a little while back it shows him holding some really deformed lepors, then with kids who have aids in africa. i dont think anyone can deny this pope is proberly the best the catholic church has offered up. i dont agree with his stance on birth control but other that he was a progressive guy, he was against the war in iraq, he helped bring down the soviet union, survived living under nazism.

Damn, the Pope must be PISSED... he came THIS CLOSE to dying on Easter, but instead will probably cash out on April Fool's Day. How embarrassing.

    Oh the irony....

On the other hand, I'd have to agree with others and say that he was a good man, and managed to walk the fine line between being slightly more reform minded while pleasing the conservatives. However, what I'm most scared about is whoever the next pope's gonna be, because rumour has it that there's a strong ultra-conservative contingency that might be able to get one of theirs elected... That'll be a sad day if that actually happens.

Well they seem to be saying it's quite lightly to be an African or Latin American Pope next. Roman Catholicism is growing more on the African continent than anywhere else in the world. But at the end of the day who really knows cept them in the know.

If that were to be the case, I think it would be great. Old Europeans have had power for far too long, and fact is European and North American catholics are vastly outnumbered by South Americans and Africans. It would only be fair.

I just watched today how the Cardinals vote on the next Pope, it's a 700 year old tradition...it was fascinating. It's nice to know some things haven't been altered by technology.

I'm no longer a practicing Roman Catholic, but news of the Pope's poor health really made me sad. I even considered going to Mass today or at least visiting the Church, lighting a candle and saying a prayer. He's an itelligent man and somehow you can feel his goodness come through, even if you don't agree with his views.

As a matter of fact, I will visit the Church...maybe even say the Rosary...if I still remember how.
